Plenty of outdoor attractions, scenic views and a lively urban atmosphere make this mountain town one of central Oregon’s most popular destinations.

Bordered by the Deschutes River, surrounded by high desert and settled between the peaks of the Cascade Range, Bend is one of central Oregon’s most scenic towns. With a ski resort, bikeways, watersports and hot springs, it's the perfect spot for outdoor adventure or a relaxing getaway.

Originally named “Farewell Bend” after its location on the Deschutes River, Bend began as a lumber town. Take the family on a cycling tour of the area on the Three Sisters Scenic Bikeway or ride through downtown following the Urban Trail System.

In summer, rent a canoe or kayak and float down the Deschutes River or try whitewater rafting if you are feeling adventurous. Children can learn to fish at Shevlin Park, which has a trout pond reserved solely for minors to fish from.

Explore Lava Lands Visitor Centre at Newberry National Volcanic Monument and learn about the volcanic activity that has shaped the region for millennia. Afterwards, recharge with a relaxing soak in the Paulina Hot Springs Lake.

In winter, head up to Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort, which is located just 22 miles (32.2 kilometres) outside the town centre. Ski or snowboard down some of the 88 runs. Non-skiers can ride down the slopes on a dog sled, snowmobile or snow tube.

Bend offers more breweries per capita than any other city in Oregon. Embark on the Bend Ale Trail and savour malts and India pale ales from some of the town’s best breweries. Enjoy the variety of restaurants, shops and galleries that line the streets downtown. Public art installations are located throughout Bend, so there is plenty to see as you walk down the streets.

The town of Bend is a 3-hour scenic drive from Portland, Oregon’s state capital. The closest airport is in Redmond, a 20-minute drive north. Bend’s agreeable climate, picturesque location and lively atmosphere make it an unmissable destination.
