The best area to stay in Voigtei is the immediate vicinity of the Steinhuder Meer, particularly around the towns of Mardorf and Steinhude.

Mardorf, on the northern shore, offers direct access to the lake and its natural surroundings. It's known for its sandy beaches and watersports facilities, great for those looking to enjoy sailing, windsurfing, or simply relaxing by the water. The promenade along the lakefront is ideal for leisurely strolls, and you'll find a selection of guesthouses and holiday flats.

For couples, Steinhude, on the southern shore, presents a slightly more developed option with a charming harbour and a wider range of restaurants and cafes. You can easily take a ferry from here to Wilhelmstein Island, a small historic fortress in the middle of the lake. The area around the harbour is particularly pleasant for an evening out.

Families will find both Mardorf and Steinhude offer a good base, with plenty of outdoor activities. Mardorf's flatter, more open spaces are great for kids to run around, while Steinhude offers boat trips and the opportunity to explore the local shops.

The best time to go to Voigtei depends on your preferences for weather and activities, but generally, late spring (May to June) and early autumn (September to October) offer the most pleasant conditions.

May and June provide mild temperatures, ideal for outdoor pursuits like cycling or walking through the scenic countryside. The landscape is lush and green, and the days are long, allowing for extended exploration of the local area and nearby natural parks.

For those who prefer slightly cooler weather and fewer crowds, September and October are excellent choices. The autumn foliage provides a beautiful backdrop, and the temperatures are still comfortable for outdoor activities.
