TRANQUIL, BIRD WATCHING, HEAR THE CHURCH BELLS! This fantastic 1200 SF Apartment is part of the “Historic Collier-Casey Estate”, circa 1874, and is situated on the premier vacation rental site in downtown Saint Marys! This 'Captains Quarters' Apartment is one of two rentals on the 'Collier-Casey Estate' property with its own private entrance and upstairs deck that overlooks an Eastern view of the Marsh, Saint Marys River, Intra-Coastal Waterway, Pass to the Atlantic Ocean and distant Cumberland and Fernandina/Amelia Islands. The “Captains Quarters”, with it’s upstairs deck offers “the best views” on the property, and is a spacious 1200 SF apartment with 14 ft. Vaulted Ceiling Great Room, with living, kitchen, and breakfast areas; over-sized queen bedroom with walk-in closet; and large bath with Jacuzzi garden tub, walk-in shower, two large double vanities, and private water closet. It is a perfect location for a couple and offers plenty of room for a week or longer stay! The tropical setting of the fully landscaped 2+ acre property, with its palm trees, moss-draped oaks, and southern pecan trees, is situated directly on the Marsh to the East, with un-obscured views of Cumberland Island, 'the pass' to the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean, and Fernandina Beach, FL.; and un-obscured River views to the south (front) of the property! No other rental property in Saint Marys offers these beautiful water views. This property is a 5 minute or less walk to the town center (only one “small town block” to the Saint Marys River waterfront and village shops and restaurants)! As stated in Southern Living Magazine article featuring Saint Marys in 2006, “There’s something about Saint Marys”! James Oglethorpe first built on Cumberland Island in 1736, building a hunting lodge that he named Dungeness. Oglethorpe named the place after Dungeness, in England. The next Dungeness was the legacy of Revolutionary War hero Nathanael Greene, who had acquired 11,000 acres of island land in exchange for a bad debt. His widow built a four-story tabby mansion in 1803, over a Timucuan shell mound. During the War of 1812 the island was occupied by the British, who used the house as a headquarters. In 1818 Henry “Light-Horse Harry” Lee, a dashing cavalry commander during the Revolutionary War and father of Robert E. Lee, stayed at the house until his death on March 25, 1818, cared for by Greene's daughter Louisa, and was laid to rest in nearby cemetery with full military honors provided by an American fleet stationed at St. Marys, Georgia. The house was abandoned during the U.S. Civil War and burned in 1866. In the 1880s the property was purchased by Thomas M. Carnegie, brother of Andrew Carnegie, who began to build a new mansion on the site. The 59-room Queen Anne style mansion and grounds were completed after Carnegie's death in 1886. His wife Lucy continued to live at Dungeness and built other estates for her children, including Greyfield for Margaret Carnegie, Plum Orchard for George Lauder Carnegie, and Stafford Plantation. By this time, the Carnegies owned 90% of the island. The Carnegies moved out of Dungeness in 1925. In 1959 the Dungeness mansion was destroyed by fire, alleged to be arson. The ruins are today preserved by the National Park Service as part of Cumberland Island National Seashore. My husband & I cannot say enough about the City of St. Marys and our wonderful stay at the Captains Quarters! Don welcomed us with his friendly, kind demeanor. He gave us a tour of the apartment and offered us lots of very interesting information. He also brought us into his incredible home which is the main house. The Captains Quarters was immaculate and decorated beautifully! It offered everything we needed and more. The marsh view with its incredible sunrises was the perfect beginning to each day. The landscaping on the property is so beautiful. There is such a variety/abundance of birds that fly over the marsh. I saw my favorite birds, the roseate spoonbills, daily. We brought our kayaks & bikes and loved exploring the river and City of St. Marys. Our day trip by ferry to Cumberland Island was fascinating! It was a wonderful place. Very clean, great view, well decorated, great location. My wife is very sensitive to smells and this placed had none. Location is easy walking distance to waterfront old town St Marys with restraints, bars, and stores. Great small town atmosphere with short drive to major stores. Don & Melody are very friendly host. Captain’s Quarters is located on the 2nd floor of the garage of the owner. Yes, you live next door to them, but this is not a big deal in terms of privacy. The apartment is bright, comfortable, and the bathroom is surprisingly modern for a circa house of 1874\. - the carpet is not the best choice of flooring when dogs are allowed… - bed is not large but good Thank you for your hospitality and the exquisite muffins! ##### Sylvain L. Don the owner is a great host, always available if need be. Though we had no issues to report. The apartment is beautiful, perfect for the two of us. It provided all the amenities, DISH tv and comfortable furniture and bedding. It is only 2 blocks from historic St Marys which added to the attraction of this property. ##### Thomas H. It is located on a historic property in a stunning location with a beautiful view over the nearby marshes from the front porch. Everything about this place was lovely and comfortable, from the bed to the jacuzzi tub to the Adirondack chairs on the balcony. Communication was fast and easy - and Don was so great. We haven't taken a vacation in quite some time due to my wife's health and the pandemic. With my wife's doctors blessing we booked a stay at the Collier-Casey Estate and stayed in the Captains Quarters. This location is the standard that all VRBO properties should be measured by. It was immaculate, inviting, pet friendly and very comfortable. Our host Don Pierce greeted us upon arrival and brought us to our home away from home, he gave us an overview of the property, offered his help in any way and then left us to settle into this beautiful apartment. Everything was exactly as it was described, the marsh and river views were perfect, the location was peaceful and the sunrises were beautiful. We spent as much time as possible on the porch overlooking the property and enjoying the comforting sea breeze.
