The Prati neighborhood is adjacent to Vatican City.
Two states coexisting within one another: Italy and the Vatican. The Vatican is the smallest sovereign state in the world, with the majestic St. Peter’s Basilica at its heart; every Sunday, the Pope recites the Angelus from here.
A visit to the Basilica is a must for anyone coming to Rome, but remember to dress appropriately—you are not allowed to enter wearing shorts, short skirts, or clothing that exposes the shoulders.
Also part of the Vatican City are the majestic Vatican Museums, one of the largest and most interesting museum complexes in the world; a visit requires a great deal of patience and energy. To avoid the long line at the entrance, you can make a reservation online.
The narrow streets around the Vatican are part of the “Borgo” district—small streets lined with small restaurants and souvenir shops, in contrast to the decidedly more open Via della Conciliazione.
The Prati neighborhood has a completely different “vibe”; with its many shops, it’s a favorite destination for shopping enthusiasts.
Getting Around the Area
Metro Line A connects the nearby Ottaviano San Pietro stop to Termini Station in just a few minutes. Tram 19 and other buses provide extensive service throughout the neighborhood and surrounding areas. It’s also easy to get around on foot; in just 5 minutes, you can reach St. Peter’s Square, Castel Sant’Angelo, Piazza del Popolo, or the Vatican Museums.
The area is also brimming with bars, restaurants, and pubs to satisfy every taste, and shopping streets like Via Cola di Rienzo are practically right on your doorstep.
For those who love to stroll, all the most beautiful shopping streets are just a few minutes away: Via Cola di Rienzo, Via Ottaviano, Via del Corso, and Via Condotti, as well as the Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona, the Trevi Fountain
