Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Ngari?
The best area to stay in Ngari is Burang County, particularly the town of Burang itself.

Burang is the most developed and accessible area for travellers in Ngari. It's located in a valley near the borders with Nepal and India, making it a significant trading post. The town offers the best selection of guesthouses and basic hotels, along with a few local eateries and shops. The area is known for its stunning mountain views, including Gurla Mandhata, and is a key starting point for pilgrimages to Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar.

For those undertaking a pilgrimage or an adventure trek, Burang is an essential base. It allows for acclimatisation to the high altitude before venturing further into the more remote parts of Ngari, such as the areas around Mount Kailash. The town provides practical amenities like food and supplies that are harder to find elsewhere in the region.

Solo travellers and small groups will find Burang offers a practical and relatively comfortable stopover.
When is the best time to go to Ngari?
The best time to visit Ngari is from May to October, avoiding the harshest winter conditions and the peak of the monsoon season.

During these months, the weather is more agreeable, with warmer temperatures and less snow, making travel through the high-altitude terrain more feasible. This period offers clearer skies, which is ideal for enjoying the expansive landscapes and for stargazing, a popular activity in this remote region.

For those planning to visit Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar, the summer months (June to August) are particularly good. The passes are generally open, and the weather is at its mildest, making trekking and circumambulation (kora) more comfortable. This is especially important for pilgrims who undertake these physically demanding journeys.

If your focus is on wildlife viewing, especially the Tibetan antelope or wild yak, the shoulder months of May and October can be excellent.
