Spend half a day exploring the natural wonders of the Naples Zoo. This conservation zoo, located in the lush Caribbean Gardens near central Naples, is home to a large number of plant and animal species. The Naples Zoo began when Dr. Henry Nehrling bought the site in 1919 with the intention of creating a haven for nature to “preserve what is still left.” Throughout the 20th century, the zoo and its surrounding gardens have built on its collection of flora and fauna and retains its focus on conservation. Walk around the camouflaged enclosures to admire fierce and intriguing species. See the rare honey badger, an incredibly savage predator that is found in only four zoos in America. Try hand-feeding the tall giraffes or delight in the snapping jaws of alligators as they are fed by their keepers. Explore and engage with the 70 animal species including lemurs, leopards and hyenas. Take a catamaran tour on the Primate Expedition Cruise and see several endangered species of monkey or gorilla in their natural habitats. The kids will love the Safari Canyon, where you’ll see clips of predators in action while seeing the same species of animals, tamed and up close, with their human presenters. Join a “Meet the Keeper” show to learn how the zoo animals are fed and cared for. Staff members are happy to answer any questions you may have. Take a walk amid thousands of plant species in the Tropical Garden with anything from mango trees to large figs. The aromas and colors of this protected garden make for a calming experience. For a pleasant lunch or a coffee, visit the zoo food stand or the gift shop. Naples Zoo charges an entry fee and is open year-round except Christmas and New Year’s Day. Free parking is provided. (1,001 reviews) I'll preface this by saying that i had an incredible week and rhat Captiva is literal Paradise. My lodging however could use some work. The main office, gym facility, and retail establishments are excellent. Unfortunately my actual suite could use some work. While the facility was clean and had a spectacular view- the lodging was old and tired. Dirty elevators cheaply updated should have been a sign of things to come. Once inside the lodging I found cheap plastic flooring that flexed as you walked over uneven surface underneath. The walls were "updated" with textured wall covering the in areas was peeling. Baseboard looked as if a child did.the job. Poorly finished, improperly cut, and nailholes unfinished. Most things painted revraled many layers of old paint. Nights 1 and 2 were spent listening to the toilet by the bedroom run. Despite requesting it be remedied- it took speaking to the property manager on day 3 to get this accomplished. Ironically, the second toilet also broke and needed repair. Additionally- the water was only "warm" in the shower. Dining at the "resort" facilities is ridiculously expensive, so I ate better elsewhere for the same price. Lastly, there's no hospitality all week. You make your own bed, hang your towels, and if you want more- you drive to get them yourself.
