Boxotel is an eco-responsible and eco-friendly boutique hotel that offers its guests fully furnished apartment-style units - a home-away-from-home type experience - with amenities designed to offer an elevated stay. From our custom-made memory foam mattresses to our organic cotton linens, we take great pride in outfitting our units with quality furnishings. We do not "task" our guests with doing their laundry. Rather we expect and encourage an ecologically responsible approach to water consumption and detergent use, which is why we do not offer daily cleanings or linen changes. Each unit has a washer/dryer so that guests are free to refresh their clothes or linens with residential sized machines that take less water and electricity. We do not, however, show people how to do laundry. For instance, when towels are deeply soiled, the last thing we would suggest is to wash them and dry them with the stains still apparent as that simply "cooks" the stains in the fabric, rendering them unusable for future guests. We hold ourselves to a high standard of hygiene and cleanliness, so stained towels -even if they are clean - cannot and will not be offered to other guests.Inexpensive towels would not only look out of place but would be a bad investment as they would need to be replaced more frequently making it financially reckless and environmentally unsound. Finally, we believe it is just fair that any damaged items be charged to a guest and this is standard practice in the hotel industry. I'm sorry this left a bad taste in your mouth as we want all our guests to have an enjoyable experience. I do hope however that you appreciated the free early check-in that we offered you when you arrived. Safe travels.

Emily, I'm sorry to hear that we did not meet your expectations, despite having seemed to rather enjoy the free breakfast & coffee and 4-star accommodations. And your nearly 2 hours in the spa with your (unregistered) friends seemed like all it needed was a couple of rounds of margaritas. Sadly, we're not that kind of hotel. We do expect some courtesy from our guests when they stay with us and trust me, I take no pleasure in policing unruly guests as it is unfortunately part of my job description. I hope your next hotel stay (wherever it is) will give you the service to which you are seemingly entitled. All the best.

Hi Christine, thank you for taking the time to write a review. Yes, the building is under 24-hour video-surveillance for our guests' safety and that of our staff. Since this is a self check-in hotel that offers guests more autonomy, we as hoteliers must ensure that all common areas are clean, and again, safe. But rest assured, "Big Brother" is not watching you in your room as that would be illegal.The frosted glass partitions in the washrooms are a feature that, granted, is not for everyone. I'm sure when you booked your stay you researched Boxotel and looked at the photos of our rooms. Please know that we do have a series of rooms with solid washroom wall partitions which you can have request upon booking.We also take seriously our rules and policies which are clearly stated in numerous emails and in the guest portal. We may have been a bit eager to intervene when you checked in, but we did see 4 adults with suitcases enter a room intended for 2 adults. You'd be surprised at what some ill-intentioned people will do to save a few bucks in this business. Also, Boxotel is not a party hotel. Our intention and mandate is to offer a relaxing and comfortable environment for all guests.Speaking of comfort, we're sorry you weren't satisfied with our bespoke mattresses and pillows. We are quite proud of supporting local businesses (both are manufactured in and around Montreal) and since the pillows have just recently all been replaced (we do that regularly) they might still have that out-of-the-box rigidity.We appreciate your feedback and please know that we take our work - and our policies - very seriously. We hope your next hotel experience, wherever it may be, will be more suited to your tastes.
