Experience nostalgia for your childhood at Tai Yuen Street’s toy markets. Visitors of all ages will enjoy browsing shops packed from floor to ceiling with limited-edition, retro and modern toys and games. The market took shape in the 1990s when shops began to offer classic toys. Visit Tai Yuen Street today to enjoy viewing old-fashioned toys while absorbing the chaotic yet friendly ambiance of a Hong Kong street market.

A riot of colours and cacophony of noises hits you as you enter the toy stores. Discover everything from Star Wars and Marvel Comics figures to Tamiya remote control cars and hard-to-get LEGO sets. Purchase Barbie dolls, collectable anime figurines, teddy bears and traditional board games. Find toys from Peppa Pig and Thomas the Tank Engine, among other popular children’s cartoon characters.

Complementing the toy stores are shops that specialize in seasonal events. Local residents come to buy flowers, red lanterns, red envelopes, ribbons and other typical decorations used during Chinese New Year celebrations. Shop for party costumes and spooky decorations for Halloween. As Christmas approaches, shops become treasure troves of angels, baubles, snowmen and Santa-themed goods.

While toys and decorations are featured prominently, numerous shops have many other items to purchase, from inexpensive electronics to discount clothing, hair accessories and slippers. Pause to sample fried chicken and bowls of noodles between retail activities.

The market stretches for roughly 600 feet (200 metres) between Johnston Road and Queens Road East in the Wan Chai neighbourhood. Travel here by tram, which stop at the northern end of the market. Wan Chai subway station is only a 2-minute walk away. Visit nearby attractions including Hung Shing Temple, Pak Tai Temple and the Hong Kong House of Stories.

Tai Yuen Street is open daily. Opening hours of the individual toy stores and other shops may vary. Bargaining is common in Hong Kong so feel free to try to get lower prices on items you want to purchase.

Very chic and austere…and the front desk was incredible. I came in on crutches and Guy at the front desk recommended the right place to go to get chef out. Restaurants abound. Quiet, clean and very comfortable (esp the pillow top bed). Wish there was a restaurant on site for breakfast, however. That’s said, it got us out!
