The best area to stay in Luttern is the Old Town, known locally as Altstadt, which is the historical and cultural heart of the city.

The Altstadt is Luttern's main visitor area, characterised by its historical market square, Marktplatz, and the impressive Luttern Cathedral. The narrow, cobbled streets are largely pedestrianised, making it very pleasant for walking. You'll find a good selection of independent shops, traditional taverns, and cafes located among well-preserved half-timbered houses. The Luttern River, which winds its way through the Altstadt, adds to the picturesque setting.

Couples looking for a romantic getaway will find the Altstadt perfect. Its charming lanes, riverside walks, and selection of fine dining restaurants create a lovely setting for an intimate trip. You can easily spend your days exploring historical sites and your evenings enjoying a quiet meal or a drink at a traditional pub.

Solo travellers who appreciate history and convenience will also find the Altstadt ideal. All the main attractions, like the Luttern History Museum and the city's main theatre, are within easy walking distance.

The best time to go to Luttern is during the spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) months, when the weather is pleasant and the natural beauty of the region is at its peak.

Spring in Luttern sees the countryside awakening with blooming wildflowers and lush greenery, making it ideal for outdoor activities like hiking and cycling. The temperatures are mild, typically ranging from 10°C to 20°C, superb for exploring the forests and lakes without the heat of summer or the chill of winter. This period is particularly good for those who appreciate nature and scenic walks.

Autumn offers a spectacular display of colours as the leaves change, creating a picturesque backdrop for your visit. The weather remains comfortable, usually between 8°C and 15°C, and there are often local harvest festivals to enjoy. This season is superb for couples looking for a romantic escape, with opportunities for cosy evenings and charming daytime excursions amidst the colourful landscape.

While summer (July and August) is also popular, with warmer temperatures averaging 20°C to 25°C, it can be busier with local holidaymakers.
