Find hotels in Kounali from CA $31

The best area to stay in Kounali is the main village and the surrounding hillside, particularly for those seeking tranquillity and stunning views.

The village of Kounali itself is a small, traditional Cretan settlement located in the hills. It's characterised by its stone houses, a central square with a few local tavernas, and a church. The area is quite spread out, with villas and guesthouses dotted along the winding roads that offer panoramic views of the sea and the surrounding mountains. It's a place where you'll find a slower pace of life, away from the more bustling coastal resorts.

This area is particularly well-suited for couples looking for a peaceful retreat. The secluded nature of many villas, often with private pools, provides an ideal setting for relaxation and privacy. You'll find opportunities for scenic walks in the countryside and enjoy meals at authentic local tavernas without the crowds.

Families also find Kounali an excellent choice, especially those with older children who appreciate the quiet and the space. Many villas are spacious, offering multiple bedrooms and outdoor areas for recreation.

The best time to visit Kounali is during the shoulder seasons of May, early June, September, and early October.

These months offer pleasant weather, with warm temperatures superb for exploring the outdoors and enjoying the beaches, without the intense heat and larger crowds of mid-summer. You'll find the sea is warm enough for swimming, and the natural landscape is at its most beautiful.

For couples seeking a relaxing getaway, these periods are ideal. The fewer crowds mean a more tranquil experience at archaeological sites like the Palace of Knossos and a more intimate setting for dining at waterfront tavernas. You'll also find it easier to book excursions and secure preferred tables at popular restaurants.

Families travelling with school-aged children might find the October half-term a good option, as the weather remains mild and the sea is still inviting.
