Top Iwate Hotel Reviews

Hotel Metropolitan Morioka New Wing

10/10 Excellent

"The staff was very friendly and professional. I arrived there almost 1 hr before check in and the staff was accommodating and allowed me to stay in the lobby area while i waited for check in time. The room i stayed was very spacious and had complimentary drinks which I had to pay extra if I drank but still thought that was very nice! If I decide to come back to morioka again I'll definitely remember this hotel."

ART HOTEL Morioka

10/10 Excellent

"Impeccable bed and bathroom ❤️ This was the best sleep I had in a while! Large, soft towels. Quality cosmetics and other amenities. They provide single-use, as well as solid slippers for the room. I also liked the futuristic self-checkin/checkout machines in the lobby (we did not use the checkin, but the checkout was a breeze). The room size was very generous for a Japanese hotel. The bed was splendidly, perfectly clean (there were some small spots here and there, but sadly not all guests know to act civilized in a hotel room). This stay was a joy! Five stars, no contest!"

Crowne Plaza Resort Appi Kogen by IHG

8/10 Good

"A nice set-up for a ski-in/ski-out resort. My kids also had great lessons with an English instructor. Getting to Appi Kogen was also quite easy with the buses from Morioka Station. We were also bumped up to a larger room, which was very comfortable, especially by Japanese standards. That was also great. However….. The only drawback was the very limited food options, especially for dinner with young kids, who don’t eat very much anyway. We live in Japan, so we’re accustomed to Japanese portions, local izakayas, bentos, etc. But this was challenging. It was either spend 20,000¥-30,000¥ for a mediocre buffet, where the kids just wanted a few bites of the simplest food. Or a yakiniku restaurant that would’ve been 30,000¥ - 40,000¥ for a family of 4. High-end sushi spot that would’ve been even more pricey. (The room service menu is quite sad, and again would be close to 20,000¥) Or, you’re left with getting instant Nissin ramen cups at the convene, which is what we ended up doing the last night. (Breakfast, again, pay steep prices at the buffet, or wait till the bakery opens at the comically late hour of 10:00am, when you of course want to be on the slopes.) Anyway, I’d suggest packing some of your own bentos, or be prepared to pay. ¥¥¥¥¥¥"

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to go to Iwate?

The best time to go to Iwate depends on your preferred activities, with spring (April to May) and autumn (October to November) generally offering the most pleasant conditions.

For those who appreciate natural beauty, spring is an excellent choice. The cherry blossoms usually bloom from mid-April to early May, transforming areas like Morioka Castle Site Park into stunning pink and white landscapes. The weather is mild, making it ideal for exploring the region's many outdoor attractions, such as the picturesque Geibikei Gorge.

Autumn is also a fantastic time to visit, particularly for its vibrant autumn foliage. From mid-October to early November, the mountains and valleys, including the Hachimantai area, are awash with crimson and gold leaves. The cooler, crisp air is great for hiking and enjoying local festivals.

If you're interested in winter sports, December to March offers excellent skiing and snowboarding opportunities at resorts like Appi Kogen. However, be prepared for cold temperatures and heavy snowfall.
