Hear fascinating stories of pirate attacks and slave revolts that were halted by the stern defenses of Fort Christiansvaern. Survey the imposing yellow walls and explore the soldiers’ living quarters, which have remained almost completely untouched since Danish soldiers were stationed here. Wander along the Christiansted seafront and look for the striking Fort Christiansvaern. The fort was originally constructed between 1738 and 1749, using mainly bricks that were brought to the island as ship’s ballast. It was designed to protect the island from pirate sieges and slave revolts. Following hurricane damage in 1771, several parts of the complex were rebuilt. The structure remains one of the best-preserved examples of a European fort in the Virgin Islands. Stand outside the fort and admire the imposing, yellow walls before making your way through the main entrance into the interior. The inside is laid out in a star formation around a small central courtyard. Walk around the barracks, which are outfitted with period furnishings, and the kitchen with old-style cooking utensils. Continue downstairs and discover the small, dark rooms of the dungeon. Step inside one of the dingy spaces and it will soon become clear why everyone from pirates to local criminals and slaves feared being locked up inside the fort. Escape the prison and head for the upper deck. The cannons that are displayed here were set-up so they could, if necessary, fire upon enemy ships as they approached the island. The views across the bay from the fortifications are spectacular. Watch people swimming from the beach at Protestant Cay or gaze across the rolling green hills behind you. Fort Christiansvaern is just a short stroll from the center of town. The fort is open daily, with the exception of a few major public holidays. (493 reviews) The Tamarind Reef Resort has the potential to be great. The views are incredible, the pool is huge and well taken care of and the restaurant has decent food. They have great bartenders and servers that work at the Deep End bar and restaurant. The rooms could use a serious deep clean and the utensils, pans, cooking supplies need a major upgrade. The coffee pot leaks all over, the one pan really needs to be tossed. The resort offers laundry service on their website but that's not the case. There was stains on the sheets. The off white plastic trashcan is so dirty. There is a rusted out safe in the room that doesn't work. It truly is a bunch of little things that need some attention. It could be a really nice resort but there is obviously some neglect that should be taken care of. (199 reviews) I fell going down the stairs because the hand rail oddly ends before the steps do. I have sent pictures and explanation to management days ago (day we left) and have not recieved a responce. Everything was average. The beach was definitely not the focal point. The employes were hit or miss. Extremely rude bartender 2 days! Pretty sure she was let go but still it was obvious. Place could be better with a more appealing beach presence and lounger chairs. There were several rusted. Room was decent. There was a peice nissing from our closet door. (We didnt ask for it to be fixed) The latch on the patio door was rusted and fell off several times (we secured it back, again without reporting). And there wer these little bugs around the sink and counter above the mini fridge. I mentioned that casually to one of the managers but didnt follow up. We just didt use that area. I asked for a first floor due to my disability and there were none available but they di show mw where the service elevatoe was. I'd rather just carefully use the stairs with haidrails. Props to some of the Amazing staff including Bethany, Orlando, hopefully the new guy fits in good!
