The best area to stay in Faro is the historic Old Town (Cidade Velha) for its central location and distinctive character.Old Town is a walled district, easily recognised by its Arco da Vila entrance, and is where you'll find many of Faro's most important landmarks, including the Cathedral and the Bishop's Palace. Its cobbled streets are largely pedestrianised, creating a relaxed atmosphere for exploring the traditional architecture and small squares. It's also right next to the marina, offering pleasant waterside walks.Couples often find Old Town particularly appealing. The area's historic charm, coupled with its selection of intimate restaurants and cafes, provides a romantic setting. You're also well-placed to enjoy evening strolls along the waterfront.Another excellent option, particularly for those who appreciate convenience and a slightly more contemporary feel, is the area around the main shopping streets, Rua de Santo António and Rua Ferreira Almeida. This district is just outside the Old Town walls and offers a wider array of shops, cafes, and restaurants.

The best time to visit Faro is during the spring and autumn months, specifically from April to May and September to October. These periods offer pleasant weather and a more relaxed experience without the peak summer crowds.During spring, the weather is comfortably warm, and the region is lush with blooming wildflowers. It's an excellent time for exploring the Ria Formosa Natural Park, where you can enjoy birdwatching or boat trips in pleasant conditions. The city is lively but not overwhelmingly busy, making it ideal for couples or those seeking a peaceful escape with good weather.Autumn also provides warm, sunny days, superb for enjoying Faro's beaches and outdoor cafes. The sea remains warm enough for swimming into October, and the harvest season brings local festivals and fresh produce to the markets.
