![The Church of St. George is one of eleven monolithic churches in Lalibela.

Carved from solid red volcanic rock in the 12th century, it is the most well known and last built of the eleven churches in the Lalibela area, and has been referred to as the “Eighth Wonder of the World”. 

Lalibela, King of Ethiopia, sought to recreate Jerusalem, and structured the churches landscape and religious sites in such a way as to achieve such a feat. The churches at Lalibela are clustered in two major groups, one representing the earthly Jerusalem, and the other representing the heavenly Jerusalem. Located directly between them is a trench representing the River Jordan.

"Stayed in the treehouse and it was excellent. The view of the sunset was visible and I slept like a baby each night. Will definitely stay there again. The staff were friendly the dinner options were great. Breakfast options were limited but what was there was tasty. Relatively close to the Rock churches so that was good."

"We had a very peaceful and pleasant stay. The gardens are large, lots if flowers, large trees, birds, and monkeys. The facilities need some maintenance and the trash should be picked up from the gardens. A great value and a nice refuge from Addis. Horses were fun and the staff were very helpful. "I have traveled the world with my family, and HIGHLY recommend the Mayleko Lodge. I selected the lodge at random, and was glad I did. The service was incredible. The Hotel Manger paid personal visits to our room to ensure that we were doing well, and in one case noted we were late for breakfast, and offered to arrange room service so we would not miss our breakfast. "This hotel is "home from home" which is due to the very friendly and very helpful staff who are customer focused. The whole hotel staff team are exceptional in particular Rekik at reception who always collaborated with me in teasing family and friends visiting me at the hotel and Shetaye serving Secial tea & St George beer in the bar where I engaged in good conversation. It is easily accessible from the airport and the breakfast is always excellent."
