Cottage in the Village
Summary: This charming cottage is nestled in the heart of Dauphin Island, Alabama’s picturesque barrier island on the Gulf Coast. Recently renovated, it’s the ideal retreat for families, fishermen, and snowbirds seeking a relaxing escape. Enjoy miles of pristine white sand beaches, fresh Gulf seafood, and world-class deep-sea fishing and diving—all just moments away.
The Space: Completely renovated in 2022, this island cottage was thoughtfully redesigned with stylish finishes that reflect the natural beauty of Dauphin Island. Upgraded with stainless steel appliances, granite countertops, and a fully stocked kitchen, the home also features inviting front and back porches and a bright, airy bathroom with a custom bathtub and shower.
This spacious retreat is perfect for unwinding after a day on the water. The master bedroom offers a king-sized bed and flat-screen TV, while the bunk room provides a cozy space with large bunk beds.
Start your mornings with coffee on the front porch and end your day grilling on the oversized back patio. Nestled in the heart of the village, this peaceful cottage is the perfect island escape.
Guest Access: The entire home, including the porch and yard, is yours to enjoy! Located in one of the best spots on the island, you’ll have easy access to incredible fishing—right across the street!
The Neighborhood: The 164-acre Audubon Bird Sanctuary is less than a 10-minute walk (.3 miles) from the steps of Alvarado. The sanctuary is a well-known destination for birdwatchers in search of one of the hundreds of species that live in and migrate through the sanctuary year-round, such as herons and pelicans. Visitors can take a walking tour though the palmetto palms where they can experience the birds in the lush native flora and fauna of the island. The Mobile Bay Ferry is located just around the corner from Alvarado, just a 2-mintue drive or a 7-minute walk (.4 miles). The ferry, which departs every hour and a half during the day, transports passengers to the historic Fort Morgan located in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Just past the ferry is a popular boat launch on the island, where anglers launch their boats sunrise to sundown. Boat trailer parking for the boat launch can be tricky, especially during summer months, so Alvarado’s close proximity to the launch makes it an ideal location for anglers because of the extended boat parking offered to guests. Each unit can accommodate one boat trailer in addition to their parking. The Dauphin Island Estuarium, an aquarium that is home to more than 100 different species of native Alabama marine life, and the historic Fort Gaines, where you can find guided tours of the 1821 fort that protected Mobile Bay during the Civil War, are both located within one mile of the property as well. There are three public beaches on Dauphin Island — the East End Public Beach, Bienville Beach and the West End Public Beach. The closest beach access to Alvarado is the East End Beach, which a little more than a mile away from Alvarado past Fort Gaines (a 5-minute drive or 20-minute walk). With the almost dozen restaurants and snack bars on the island, there’s no shortage of local fare and fresh seafood. Almost every menu on the island serves up the freshest seafood in the South, including freshly caught snapper, grouper, oysters and crab. During the summer there are outdoor movies shown on the West End of the island, and the Dauphin Island Fishing Rodeo during July brings more than 75,000 spectators to the island for a weekend of fun and sports fishing. Even though the island is small (it’s only 14 miles long and less than 2 miles wide or less, in some areas), it offers an endless amount of activities for vacationers, including an 18-hole golf course and endless water activities. Boat, jet ski, stand-up-paddleboard and kayak rentals are available, as well as sunset cruises and beach access to most of the 17 miles of powder, white sand beaches that wrap around the island. These offerings, in addition to deep-sea fishing and diving, make this Gulf Coast sanctuary one of the top destinations for those looking to escape the crowds and enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the Gulf. We hope you enjoy your stay at Alvarado and enjoy exploring the beautiful Alabama Gulf Coast during your visit!
Getting Around: Located on the East End, this home offers easy access to nearby attractions and restaurants, whether you prefer a quick drive, a bike ride, or a leisurely walk. While there is no public transportation, the island’s scenic walking and biking trails make getting around a breeze. The driveway provides parking for up to four cars.

The Cottage in the Village was a very comfy and clean stay. The location was great for any place you go to, the beach, dinner or shops. The process of checking in and out was simple and great communication with the owner. I would recommend this property to anyone staying on the island.
Perfectly updated little house for our family of 4! We honestly didn’t spend much time at the house with how beautiful the island is, but the time spent at the house couldn’t have been better. Comfy beds, huge TV’s, nice couches! Also centrally located so easy access to anything you want to do!
Me and my colleague stayed here because our other colleague who lives on island was just down the road. We were able to walk to the bakery for breakfast and to most of what we needed! It was clean and nice!
It was great, very clean and organized. Had all the essentials for an enjoyable stay. Bed was a little soft for my liking but thats just personal preference. We're actually locals and just wanted to spend our 35th anniversary on the island. Glad we did, we had a great couple of days. Hope to do it again.
Our family of 5 plus our dog stayed comfortably at this cottage for 5 nights in March for spring break. We enjoyed walking to the popular breakfast place, tried all 3 public beaches, the aquarium and lots of hiking through bird sanctuaries. We used the main walking path in town for morning runs. The cottage was very clean with a well-equipped kitchen. We very much enjoyed our stay. Thanks!
Wonderful cottage. Very comfortable with all your vacation needs. We enjoyed the location and the cleanliness of the cottage and being able to have our dog with us. We loved the location with short ride to public beaches. The porches were perfect quiet spots for morning coffee and afternoon reading. King bed is a bit too soft for us but still rested well. Communication could have been a bit faster but always professional and answered all our questions. We will stay here again!
The house was wonderfully cozy for the two of us. We spent most of our daylight hours outdoors and the house was a pleasant spot to end the day! Dauphin Island is a great bird watching location and the house is located within a very short walk to a premier birding hotspot. Many other birding hotspots were a short drive from the house. Everything on the island seemed to work well; ferry, parking and pleasant locals! Shopping is limited and groceries should be purchased before driving onto the island.
We were getting some work done on our kitchen so we needed to get away with our kids and dogs. With it also being spring break, we chose Dauphin Island to avoid the college riffraff. We absolutely loved it! This little house was PERFECT for our needs. It was close to everything. The comfortable sofas and large tvs were perfect for when we needed to rest with our little after all the fun.
The only things I will note which in no way are a reflection of the property itself is that the cleaning person was literally pulling out the driveway at 3pm when we arrived to check in. We drove around the block and when we got back, the floors were still wet from just being mopped. Also, the tub drain was completely clogged and barely drained. My husband took care of that.
Overall I would still recommend this place. It fit my husband and I, our two little girls, and our two old labs perfectly!
Clean, pet-friendly, VERY comfortable mattress. There's a little walking nature trail around the corner, very quiet and calm street. Short drive to the beach or anything that I needed. It was a very cute home to stay in.
We had a rocky start with our entry code not working and the WiFi was disconnected (not fault of the hosts), but, the hosts responded quick and gave us the proper help and assistance needed to have a smooth stay. This is our second year staying at one of their properties and we never have a bad experience!
The house was absolutely perfect for everythung we needed and was looking for. Great location, great neighborhood, lots of families doing outdoor activities. Walking trails, restaurants, fishing, tourist attractions nearby.
