![Cluis-Dessous (Indre) Le château domine la vallée de la Bouzanne. Cette forteresse des XIIème et XVème siècles renferme un châtelet d’entrée avec des vestiges du pont-levis flanqué de tours, un donjon du XIIème siècle sur motte, une enceinte et un corps de logis des XIVème et XVème. Elle domine la Vallée de la Bouzanne. La chapelle castrale, serait romane. La forteresse protégeait la frontière entre le royaume de France et le duché d'Aquitaine. L'aspect pédagogique du lieu est indéniable. Les restaurations sont heureusement discrètes. Le premier seigneur connu de Cluis est Giraud (vers 1000 - 1040), probable vassal de Déols. Le second seigneur, Boson, est connu par des faits se rapportant à la fondation de l’église de Neuvy Saint-Sépulchre (vers 1042). Boson fut excommunié suite à son refus de comparaître devant le concile de Poitiers suite à des désaccords avec les clercs de Neuvy-saint-Sépulchre (janvier 1078). Une charte concernant l'évêque de Bourges fait mention de Boson et de son fils Bertrand en 1087. Cette famille s'est éteinte vers 1090. Vers 1092, la châtellenie est partagée entre Eudes de Lignières qui reçu la ville de Cluis (Cluis-Dessus), et les seigneurs de Gargilesse qui reçurent le castrum (Cluis-Dessous). Le dédoublement de la paroisse aboutit aux appelations "Cluis-Dessus", la ville et "Cluis-Dessous", le castrum. Les seigneurs de Gargilesse gardèrent peu de temps le château, celui-ci passant dans les mains d'Alard Guillebaud, en 1102. Alard Guillebaud mourut vers 1130 en laissant une fille (Béatrix de Châteaumeillant) qui épousa Raoul VI de Déols (seigneur de Châteauroux). Cluis-Dessous retourna ainsi dans la maison de Déols alors que Cluis-Dessus resta au duc d'Aquitaine. Lors du divorce du roi de France et d'Aliénor d'Aquitaine, en 1152, Ebbes de Déols reste fidèle à sa suzeraine remariée avec le futur roi d'Angleterre, Henri II Plantagenet. Le roi de France, Louis VII, en représailles,entreprend de dévaster les seigneries des Déols: il incendie La Châtre, Château-Meillant et une partie du château de Déols. Ebbes de son côté brûle Cluis-Dessus dont le seigneur, Garnier de Cluis, est resté fidèle au roi de France. C'est le début des guerres franco-anglaises. En 1155, un différend entre les deux seigneurs au sujet de l'abbaye de Varennes, fut arbitré par Henri II Plantagenêt. Plantagenêt se déclara «fondateur, gardien et défenseur de l’abbaye», et fit retirer l’inscription du seigneur de Déols. Ebbes de Déols mourut en 1160 en laissant Déols et Cluis-Dessous à son fils aîné Raoul VII. En 1176, Raoul entreprit le voyage de Jérusalem et mourut, la même année, au retour, à Ravenne où il fut enterré. Il laissait pour seule héritière sa fille Denise de Déols* alors âgée de trois ans. L'oncle de Denise, Eudes seigneur de La Châtre et de Châteaumeillant, la prend en charge. Henri II Plantagenêt menace d'assiéger La Châtre si la fillette ne lui est pas remise. Ayant en charge de Denise, Plantagenêt s’empara de la jouissance de ses seigneuries. Henri II mariera la fillette à un des ses chevaliers, Beaudouin de Rives. Celui-ci meurt alors que Denise n'a pas 16 ans.Le fils de Henri II, Richard Ier dit Coeur de Lion, remariera Denise à André de Chauvigny, en l'église de Salisbury en 1189, en présence d'Aliénor d'Aquitaine. En 1188, Philippe Auguste s’empare de Châteauroux et de nombreux châteaux du Bas-Berry. À la suite du traité du Goulet, en mai 1200, Jean-sans-terre abandonne l'hommage des seigneurs berrichons au profit de Philippe Auguste. Par Denise, André de Chauvigny est seigneur de Déols*, La Châtre, Châteauroux, etc. Le couple donna naissance à Guillaume Ier de Chauvigny, seigneur vers 1206. C’est lui qui dut affranchir les habitants de Cluis-Dessous, vers 1215*. Il mourut au début de l’année 1234. Ce sont les Chauvigny qui créeront la forteresse telle qu'elle se présente. Après Guillaume Ier, se succéderont comme seigneurs de Cluis-Dessous : Guillaume II*, son fils; Guillaume III*, fils du précédent, à l'origine de la forteresse; André II*, fils du précédent; André III fils du précédent qui mourra à la bataille de Poitiers en 1356*. A la fin du XIVe siècle, vers 1358, Cluis-Dessous entra brièvement dans la famille de Villemur, par mariage du vicomte de Villemur avec Marguerite de Chauvigny, fille de André III. La châtellenie devant revenir à la maison de Châteauroux après la mort de Marguerite de Chauvigny et de ses enfants, la maison de Villemur ne gardera Cluis-Dessous que jusqu'en 1401. Guy II de Chevigny, petit fils de André III de Chauvigny, réclama son bien et après paiement de 10 300 livres tournois et 4000 florins il prit possession de la châtellenie le 11 août 1401. Guy II* s’installa au château où il y mourut en 1422 à 76 ans. Guy III hérita de Cluis-Dessous (et Châteauroux). Il aparticipa à la chevauchée de Jeanne d'Arc vers Reims. Homme pieux, il fonda un ermitage dans le bois du Plaix. Il mourut à 75 ans, à Châteauroux, le 25 mars 1483. François, fils aîné du précédent, prêta hommage à l'abbaye de Saint-Sulpice de Bourges*, pour Cluis-Dessous en juillet 1484. Son fils, André IV de Chauvigny, épousa Louise de Bourbon-Montpensier. A la mort de son époux en janvier 1503, le couple n'ayant pas d'enfants, Louise hérita des domaines. Elle épousa en secondes noces, en 1504, un cousin de la branche Bourbon-Vendôme, Louis de Bourbon prince de la Roche-sur-Yon. Après un long procès avec les héritiers naturels, les châtellenies de Cluis-Dessous, Neuvy Saint-Sépulcre, Aigurande et du Châtelet reviennent à Louise de Bourbon. Cluis-Dessous était désormais dans la famille Bourbon-Montpensier. Préférant la cour, les Montpensier ne mettront pas souvent les pieds à Cluis-Dessous. Au XVIIe siècle, Anne Marie-Louise d'Orléans, duchesse de Montpensier*, la "Grande Mademoiselle", fera restaurer la chapelle Notre-Dame de la Trinité proche du château. On signale son passage à Cluis-Dessous en 1666. L'héritier de Anne Marie-Louise d'Orléans, Philippe d'Orléans, frère de Louis XIV, abandonna complètement le château qui perdit rapidement de sa splendeur. Les ducs perçoivent les revenus de Cluis-Dessous mais la forteresse est délaissée. En 1697, la châtellenie est vendue, avec les seigneuries d'Aigurande et de Sainte-Sévère, à Léonor de Flexelles*, dit le "marquis de Brégy", ambassadeur en Pologne et en Suède. Le marquis de Brégy reçut Cluis-Dessous en paiement d'une dette. Le château resta peu de temps dans la famille de Brégy, le dernier du nom, Germain Christophe*, mourut en 1762, sans descendance. Gabriel de Montaignac, descendant des Gaucourt, seigneurs de Cluis-Dessus, par sa mère, racheta le château de Cluis-Dessous et de ses dépendances en 1767*, et réunit les deux paroisses de Cluis-Dessus et de Cluis-Dessous. Le domaine passa ensuite par mariage dans la famille du marquis de Lestrange*. Les deux Cluis furent réunis en une seule commune en 1818. La commune achète le château en 1980, sa consolidation et son animation sont confiées à l’ASSC (Association pour la sauvegarde des sites de Cluis). Un ancien manuscrit, copié par le Père Péan Cordelier, assure que Raoul VII de Déols eut deux fils qu'un accident lui enleva en même temps, l'aîné à 16 ans et l'autre à 14. "Ces deux jeunes Princes prenant ensemble le divertissement de la chasse sur l'étang de Grammont, l'un d'eux tira sur un canard et le tua, et le voulant prendre se jeta inconsidérément dans l'étang, où l'autre le voyant engagé et en péril, et voulant secourir, s'y jeta aussi, et l'un et l'autre y périrent misérablement ; ce qui fut cause pour le Prince leur père en mémoire de cet accident, qui lui enlevait l'espérance de son nom et l'appui de sa maison, fonda au même lieu l'église et le prieuré de Grammont, qu'il dota de ses biens, et fit ériger en l'église un tombeau élevé, où l'on voit encore aujourd'hui dans les ruines de ce prieuré les effigies de ces deux jeunes Seigneurs gravés sur leur tombeau ..." (Histoire de Berry. Par Gaspard Thaumas de la Thaumassiere - Bourges 1689) L'abbé de Déols, attaquera le mariage de Denise de Déols avec André de Chauvigny, au prétexte d'une consanguinité incertaine qui en réalité n'est qu'une question d'intérêts. L'évêque de Bourges suivra son curé, et prononcera la nullité du mariage. Le couple fera appel au pape Célestin III, mais c'est son successeur, Innocent III qui validera le mariage. Innocent III déclarera: «il n'est pas facile de ne pas admettre un mariage qui a duré si longtemps et d'où une nombreuse descendance est issue». Cette apparente bienveillance du Pape cache certainement un marchandage, le seigneur de Déols reconnaissant la puissance de l'abbaye de Déols. "La châtellenie de Cluis-Dessous est composée de quatre paroisses, dont les habitants étaient autrefois des serfs du seigneurs châtelain. Ces habitants furent affaranchis par des seigneurs de la maison de Chauvigny, et la seigneurie est divisée de tems immémorials en quatre affranchissements généraux, celui du bourg et paroisse de Cluis, celui de la Forêt-Montpeigner, celui de Crozon, et celui de Mouheres. Le seigneur s'est réservé dans chacun de ces affranchissements des droits dont les uns sont purement personnels, les uns réels, et les autres mixtes, qui son dûs par les habitants à cause des fonds dont ils sont propriétaires." (Oeuvres posthumes de maître Louis de Héricourt contenant ses mémoires sur des questions de droit civil, tome II - Paris 1759) Guillaume II, participa aux deux croisades de Saint-Louis. Il mourut de retour de la deuxième, à Palerme, en janvier 1271. Guillaume III succéda à son père Guillaume II. C'est ce seigneur qui fit construire la forteresse. En 1292, il fit faire un dénombrement de ses fiefs. André II, prête hommage à l’abbé de Saint-Sulpice, son suzerain effectif, le 27 septembre 1327. Il donnera la châtellenie en apanage à son fils André III le 11 janvier 1335, mais son père ayant promis à sa fille Marguerite une dot de 1000 livres de terres lors de son mariage avec le vicomte de Villemur, André III dut renoncer. Le 19 septembre 1356, l'armée française est écrasée par les archers anglais au nord de Poitiers (à Nouaillé-Maupertuis). Cette défaite militaire relance la guerre de Cent Ans et qui avait commencé vingt ans plus tôt sous Philippe VI de Valois. L'armée anglaise de 7 000 hommes est commandée par le Prince Noir. Le roi de France, Jean II le Bon, aligne 15 000 hommes. La charge des chevaliers français tourne au désastre devant les archers anglais. Jean le Bon et son quatrième fils âgé de 14 ans, Philippe le Hardi, lâchés par les chevaliers lors de la poursuite du Prince Noir, seront fait prisonniers. C'est au cours de cet épisode que Philippe le Hardi encouragera son père, par ces paroles célèbres ; "Père, gardez-vous à droite, père, gardez-vous à gauche !". Le roi d'Angleterre, Edouard III, exigera une énorme rançon pour la libération du roi de France. A la mort de Jean le Bon en 1364, seul un tiers de la rançon a été payé. Le traité de Brétigny, en 1360, cédera pratiquement tout le sud-ouest de la France au royaume d'Angleterre. Guy II de Chauvigny, également vicomte de Brosse, ayant pris le parti du roi, se battra aux côtés de Dugesclin. Il sera fait chevalier de sa main. Guy II meurt à Cluis-Dessous en 1422. Située à l'ouest de Bourges, l'abbaye bénédictine Saint-Sulpice avait été dotée d'un marché hebdomadaire et de foires annuelles par Louis le Pieux. Charles le Chauve lui accorda de nombreux privilèges judiciaires, fiscaux, économiques. L'abbaye Saint-Sulpice alliait puissance matérielle et prestige religieux. A l'origine était une modeste colonie religieuse organisée par l'évêque Sulpice au VIIe siècle. Dans un acte de 650, on apprend que Clovis II accorde de nombreux avantage à l'abbé de Saint-Sulpice. Le monastère avait répondu favorablement, avec 20 monastères du Berry sur 29, à l'appel de Philippe le Bel à le soutenir dans sont conflit avec la papauté. Anne Marie-Louise d'Orléans, duchesse de Montpensier, dite "la Grande Mademoiselle", cousine germaine de Louis XIV, prit parti pour la Fronde des princes (1650-1653), elle fit même tirer les canons de la Bastille contre les troupes royales et ouvrir les portes de Paris à Condé, le 1er juillet 1652. L'échec de la Fronde auboutira au renforcement de la monarchie. Contrainte de s'exiler après le retour du jeune roi et de Mazarin, elle demeura sur sa terre de Saint-Fargeau jusqu'en 1657. En 1670, âgée de 45 ans et toujours non mariée, elle tombe amoureuse du bellâtre Lauzun de six ans son cadet. Séducteur impénitent, Lauzun disputa même au roi la conquète de madame de Valentinois, ce qui lui fit goûter la bastille une première fois. Il séjourna à la bastille une deuxième fois, pour s'être caché sous le lit du roi et de madame de Montespan, afin d'écouter leur conversation, pour savoir si la maîtresse du roi était responsable d'un refus du roi concernant une charge demandée. Après avoir d'abord accepté, devant le tolé général, le roi refusa le mariage de la Grande Mademoiselle et de Lauzun. Lauzun, arrêté dans sa chambre à saint-Germain, fut conduit par d'Artagnan à la forteresse de Pignerol où il retrouva Fouquet; il y resta 10 ans, de 1671 à 1681. En 1695, à l'âge de 62 ans, le vieux barbon épouse une belle-sœur de Saint-Simon, Geneviève-Marie de Durfort, âgée de 15 ans. Il s'éteint en 1723 à 90 ans. On dit que la duchesse de Montpensier épousa Lauzun secrètement, vers 1671, ce qui n'empêchera pas Lauzun de reprendre sa carrière de séducteur. Malgré sa grande richesse, la duchesse de Montpensier resta d'une avarice légendaire qui la rendit peu sympathique. Le 15 avril 1693, elle fut prise d'une maladie de vessie qui s'aggrava rapidement. Elle mourut le 5avril, à 66 ans, et fut enterrées à Saint-Denis. "Au milieu de la cérémonie, une urne dans laquelle, par un arrangement bizarre, on avait enfermé les entrailles, « se fracassa avec un bruit épouvantable et une puanteur subite et intolérable [59]. » Des femmes s’évanouirent, le reste de l’assistance gagna le grand air à la course. « — Tout fut parfumé et rétabli, » mais cette scène burlesque devint la risée de Paris. Il était écrit que la Grande Mademoiselle aurait toujours son petit coin de ridicule, même le jour de son enterrement." (La Grande Mademoiselle - Arvède Barine - Revue des Deux Mondes tome 25, 1905) Léonor de Flesselles (Flexelles, Flécelles) dit «Marquis de Brégy» décédé sans enfants en 1712. Il est également vicomte de Corbeil, seigneur de Tigery, chevalier d’honneur au Siège & Présidial de Crépy-en-Valois, conseiller d’Etat, Lieutenant pour le Roi au Gouvernement de l’Isle de France, Ambassadeur Extraordinaire en Pologne puis en Suède. En 1676, il épouse en premières noces Dame Marie des Croisettes-de Saint Mesme et en seconde noces (décédée en octobre 1688), et en secondes noces, en 1696, Catherine Jeanne Auzanet, fille de Barthélémi Auzanet, conseiller au Grand Conseil . Germain Christophe Flécelles dit le Marquis de Brégy, baron de Sainte-Sévère, seigneur de Brégy, d'Aigurande, d'Aigurandelle, de Cluis-Dessous, de la Vervollière, etc, est décédé en août 1762 dans la terre de Cluis-Dessus appartenant au marquis de Gaucourt. Il fut inhumé dans l'église Saint-Christophe de Cluis. Le fief comprend 100 hameaux ou métairies (sur les paroisses de Cluis-Dessus, Mouhers, Crozon, La Buxerette, Saint-Denis de Jouhet et autres), ainsi que le fourneau à fer de Cluis-Dessous et les forges de Crozon. "I have stayed at this hotel several times and I have never found a speck of dust or a marked or unclean surface. I have always enjoyed a good undisturbed sleep. The staff are very helpful and even uncorked some wine for me. Its location is fantastic, just off the n20/a20. Free parking and free strong Wi-Fi. It is next to a retail park , cheap fuel available at carrefour. There are several fast food restaurants nearby. It’s a real bargain "
