The city of Chihuahua is the capital of the state of the same name in México. Historic buildings and classical sculptures by renowned artists line its boulevards and avenues. Discover the town’s traditional life, visit interesting museums and go for a long walk in El Palomar, one of the largest parks in the city.
Wander in Chihuahua’s old quarter to find some of its most picturesque buildings. In this pedestrian area are several beautiful churches, including the Templo de San Francisco (Church of Saint Francis), the Templo de la Sagrada Familia (Temple of the Holy Family) and the Catedral de Chihuahua. This stunning cathedral is one of the most important baroque constructions in northern México.
Stroll deeper into the old quarter to find the Plaza Mayor, the main square with a beautiful statue called Ángel de la Libertad (Angel of Freedom). Nearby take photos of the iconic Palacio de Gobierno de Chihuahua (Government Palace), with the Altar de la Patria (Altar of the Fatherland). Miguel Hidalgo was executed in 1811 in this exact spot. Hidalgo was a Mexican Roman Catholic priest and a leader of the Mexican War of Independence.
Elsewhere in the city centre, marvel at the Fuentes Danzarinas (Dancing Fountains), a fantastic free show featuring water fountains, classical music and colourful lights. Next to the fountains find the tall tower that serves as an ideal lookout to enjoy exquisite panoramic views.
South of the city centre, walk along the Paseo Bolívar, a boulevard famous for its spectacular mansions. Some of these luxurious houses are now elegant restaurants and nightclubs. The Quinta Gameros is one of the most remarkable art nouveau constructions in Chihuahua, as is the museum Centro Cultural Universitario Quinta Gameros.
