![Bridoré (Indre-et-Loire) Bridoré is a commune in the Indre-et-Loire department in central France. Forteresse militaire médiévale (XIVe - XVe), avec son dispositif de défense en l'état et unique en France (4 caponnières*), ses étuves, bains de vapeur, tout aussi exceptionnels, ses douves, son donjon, haut de 30 mètres. Medieval military fort (XIVth - XVth centuries), with fully preserved defences which are unique in France (4 caponniers), kilns, steam baths and the exceptional moat and 100ft-tall keep. A proximité de la frontière avec le Berry, le château de Bridoré renferme des vestiges qui remontent à la fin du Moyen Age et la dynastie des Valois. Le château a été bâti au 14eme/15eme siècle pour Jean Ier Le Meingre dit Boucicaut (1310-1368), Maréchal de France et lieutenant-général de la Touraine (1310-1368), sous Charles V; puis pour son fils, Jean II Le Meingre dit Boucicaut (1366-1421), également Maréchal de France à l'époque de la Guerre de Cent Ans et compagnon de Du Guesclin, sous Charles VI. Un Boucicaut, seigneur du Breuildoré ou Bridoré, serait l'auteur d'une "bergerette" : Assés ne me puis merveiller Qu'aucuns amoureux ont créance D'estre de ceulx de l'observance, Mais plus n'y veullent travaillier. Aultre nom leur convient baillier, C'est appostatz, qui pour doubtance D'avoir ung pou de pénitence Ont voulu Leauté soillier; Assés ne m'en puis [merveillier.] Cette oeuvre figure parmi les manuscrits de Charles d'Orléans sous le nom de Boucicaut. Il s'agit probablement de Louis Boucicaut , "que nous voyons en 1475 vendre, et par conséquent posséder, la terre du Breuildoré". (Rondeaux et autres poésies du XVe siècle d'après le manuscrit de la bibuothèque nationale par Gaston RAYNAUD - 1886) Le château est donc racheté, vers 1475, par Imbert de Batarnay, seigneur du Bouchage, conseiller et chambellan à la cour royale. Mort à 82 ans, Imbert de Bastarnay a officié sous les règnes de quatre têtes couronnées de Louis XI à François 1er. C'est lui qui crée les caponnières; au passage , il réhausse le donjon et le couvre d'un toit. François 1er aurait été reçu au château où Jeanne d'Arc serait également venue. Son fils René de Bastarnay (1513-1580), gouverneur du Mont Saint Michel, remet à niveau les défenses du château au début des Guerres de Religion. En 1641, le château est racheté par le marquis Charles de Viantais* (Ses filles* fondent, à Beaulieu-lès-Loches, le couvent des "Viantaises"*). La propriété de Bridoré restera dans la famille Viantais jusqu’à la Révolution. "Messire Pierre de Boursault, chevallier seigneur marquis de Viantais, a pris possession réelle et actuelle de la terre du Bridoré, érigée par Sa Majesté en tiltre de marquisat soubz le nom de Viantais en Tourainne, laquelle luy a est dellaissée en faveur de mariage par Messire Charles de Boursault, chevallier seigneur de Viantais, son père ; le tout en la présance de monseigneur son père, lequel luy a remis entre les mains les clefz de ladite maison nottamant celles du Trésor où sont les tiltres, pappiers et anseignemans des droits de ladite terre et celles de la Roche, Rangé et autres y annexées, 29 septembre 1651 (acte Chartier-Bridoré)." A la révolution, le château est vendu comme bien national. Il restera dans la même famille jusqu'à aujourd'hui. Les caponnières, ancêtres du blockhaus, inspireront Vauban. Le château de Bridoré est un des rares sites à en disposer. Le château-fort, est protégé par des douves, et doté de caponnières (moineaux) aux angles. Le dispositif permet de s'opposer aux tentatives d'attaques de bandes armées car il n'y a pas d'angle mort. Une note d'un rapport au Roi sur la province de Touraine (Charles Colbert de Croissy - 1664) nous informe que "Cette famille se nommait Boursault de Viantais. Catherine Boursault de Viantais était religieuse aux Véroniques de Blois , et en sortit pour venir fonder à Beaulieu près Loches , une maison de chanoinesses régulières , de l'ordre de Saint -Augustin. Elle vivait encore lorsque la révolution a détruit cette abbaye et affecté son enclos à la création d'une péipinière. Ce couvent fut le dernier propriétaire du château de Bridoré, fief de la famille Boursault de Viantais. En 1643 le couvent est fondé à Beaulieu par Catherine-Angélique de Boursault de Viantais, 24 ans, et sa jeune sœur Renée-Thérèse. Catherine-Angélique née le 7 mars 1619 à Paris, est la fille de messire Charles de Boursault marquis de Viantais, Oisay et de Bridoré, gentilhomme du roi et capitaine de régiment de cavalerie de sa Majesté et de Charlotte Viart de Vollay, originaire d’une grande famille du Blésois. Jusqu’à l’âge de 6 ans, Catherine-Angélique est élevée par la famille de sa mère puis envoyée au couvent de Bonlieu, dans la Sarthe. Novice à 14 ans, elle souhaite prononcer ses vœux deux ans après, mais, sa mère s’y oppose, préférerant qu’elle fasse son entrée dans le monde. La jeune fille ne change pas d'avis et entre dans un couvent de « Véroniques », à Blois, où la fonction de Prieure lui est promise. Finalement, elle décide de fonder son propre couvent, avec sa sœur Renée-Thérèse. Son père lui achètera alors trois bâtiments rue Brulée à Beaulieu. Le couvent s'agrandira par des jardins et un logis sur les bords du canal. Catherine-Angélique dirigera son couvent pendant 69 ans, jusqu’à sa mort le jour du Vendredi Saint 1712, à l’âge de 93 ans. La mère supérieure ayant pris beaucoup d’embonpoint, le cercueil ne pu emprunter un étroit escalier à vis. Faire passer le cercueil par la fenêtre poseait un problème canonique, on du donc obtenir l’autorisation de l’Archevêque de Tours. Le cercueil passa donc par la fenêtre et fut enterré dans la chapelle du couvent, jusqu’à sa profanation en 1793. Le couvent des Viantaises, à Beaulieu-lès-Loches, a été fondé en 1643, par Catherine-Angélique et Rénée-Thérèse de Boursault, filles du marquis de Viantais, seigneur de Bridoré. Les nonnes qui y vivaient étaient issues des plus grandes familles de la région. Le couvent était situé dans une zone marécageuse, et de nombreuses religieuses y mourait de fièvre dans leur jeune âge. En dehors d'une "rue des viantaises" à Beaulieu-lès-Loches, il ne reste du couvent presque rien, que quelques vestiges: une façade avec une fenêtre gothique, encadrant l’ancienne cour du Midi et la chapelle dans son renfoncement, au niveau des numéros 27 et 29 de la rue Brûlé. "We enjoyed the serenity of the location, the nature and beauty of the house and gardens. The home was secure with a gate. The animals were a bonus. We loved the old house and the antique furniture and the level of furnishings. The accommodation is very spacious and comfortable. What we found a bit odd was no curtains in the kitchen/living room and lounge areas but we have experienced the same thing in another cottage in France and therefore presume that this is the standard. In all, the advertising was exactly what was delivered and I wish to thank the host for the clarity in communication and response to my questions."

"Lovely and very well equipped fire. The pool area is great and secure for children. Kim and Jeremy were extremely welcoming, helpful and very communicative. we stayed with our two very young children and there was plenty of baby equipment (high chair, baby bath, stair gate etc) available. The location is rural but within an easy drive to lots of local amenities and chateaux. Would definitely recommend as a base to explore the area!"
