Where to Eat
The Alex name is drawn from Alexander Graham Bell which, like the hotel, pays homage to the life and times of the scientist, inventor and innovator.
The intimate cocktail lounge features a cozy, modern twist on the early 20th Century ‘Steam-Punk’ aesthetic. The palette envelops patrons with shades of black and bronze accented with deep jewel tones such as emerald green. Notable features include a twenty-foot brass pipe ceiling installation that includes crystal decanter light fixtures, multi-tiered seating and sumptuous fabrics and privacy drapes creating intimate parlor areas for guests to enjoy.
While The Alex menu offers breakfast and evening small plates, the lounge will specialize in offering highly imaginative craft cocktails, fine spirit concoctions and fine wines.
Nearby Things to Do
The hotel provides a 24-hour fitness facility on the property which can be accessed by all guests at their convenience.
The towpath along the 19th-century C&O Canal is popular for walking and jogging. Access is a half-block from the hotel. Spring through fall, mule-drawn barge rides provide a novel way to enjoy the scenery. During those months, the mules are stationed right by the canal—and are eminently pettable. Canoes are also available for rent.
Just north of busy M Street, tree-lined residential streets invite leisurely strolls past stately old townhouses and mansions. For a good walk that embraces both the quiet and bustle of Georgetown, guests can head north on 31st Street NW (2 blocks from the hotel). Stop by Tudor Place, a historic manor with exquisite gardens. A few blocks farther is the Dumbarton Oaks estate, where brick-paved paths wind through lavish floral displays, statuary, fountains, and pools. The route continues west on R Street NW, then south to lively Wisconsin Avenue, with its shops, antiques dealers, and cafés. At the foot of Wisconsin is the Potomac waterfront and the glitzy Washington Harbour development, with views of the Kennedy Center and the Watergate complex. The hotel is about 2 blocks away.
