"I found this to be a traditional Chambre d'Hôte, where you don't feel you are in a hotel but rather a guest in the house of the owners. My room was comfortable and quiet, the breakfasts were very good, and the hosts were welcoming. What more do you need? The house is about a 10-minute walk from Gaillac across the river. It is also a fairly short drive into Albi, which is a small city that is well worth exploring."

Hotel Les Pasteliers

10/10 Excellent

"The staff of this little hotel go out of their way to help their guests enjoy Albi as well as their stay at the hotel. The decor is whimsical and charmingly quirky, our room was small but convenient, comfortable and clean and had an Audrey Hepburn theme in the wall decorations! Breakfast was lovely (our croissants the best we've had at stays in three star hotels in France!), complete with diy fresh squeezed orange juice, home baked pastries, excellent baguette and jams, good coffee, cheese, sliced ham, fresh fruit, yogurt, cereals, etc. There is a pleasant little lounge area where we had a glass of wine. The building itself doesn't have an elevator and parking seemed to be "complicated" but both were irrelevant to us. It is located a short walk to the historic centre in a quiet side street of Albi. Les Pasteliers is what a small, homey, hospitable "boutique" hotel should be. If I could give more than 5 stars I would!"

Grand Hôtel d'Orleans

10/10 Excellent

"The staff was super nice and friendly. The front desk people speak English and they accommodated us well according to our needs. They provided information about a free electric bus. The breakfast was good and the pool very refreshing. Thank you!"

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Vieux?

The best area to stay in Vieux is the heart of the Old Town, particularly around the Place de la Liberté.This area is the historical and cultural centre of Vieux, characterised by its narrow, cobbled streets and mediaeval architecture. The Place de la Liberté itself is a large, open square often bustling with local life, surrounded by cafes and independent shops. Many of the city's key landmarks, including the Cathédrale Saint-Étienne, are just a short walk away.Couples often find this area ideal for a romantic and convenient stay. The charming streets are great for leisurely strolls, and the concentration of quality restaurants and wine bars makes evening plans effortless. You'll be perfectly placed to explore the city's heritage and enjoy evenings out without needing to travel far.For those seeking a quieter experience with easy access to green spaces, the area just south of the Old Town, bordering the Jardin des Plantes, is an excellent alternative.

When is the best time to go to Vieux?

The best times to visit Vieux are during the shoulder seasons of spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October).During spring, the weather is pleasantly mild, and the countryside is lush with blooming flowers. This period avoids the peak summer crowds, making it ideal for exploring the historic sites and enjoying outdoor activities without feeling rushed. You'll find it easier to book quality accommodation and secure reservations at popular restaurants.Autumn brings comfortable temperatures and the beautiful colours of the changing foliage, particularly in the vineyards surrounding Vieux. This is also harvest season, offering unique opportunities to experience local wine festivals and taste fresh regional produce. Like spring, it offers a more relaxed pace than the height of summer, appealing to those who appreciate a calmer travel experience. While summer (July and August) offers warm, sunny weather great for enjoying the Mediterranean coast, it's also the busiest and most expensive time to visit, with larger crowds at key attractions.
