The capital of Liechtenstein is an extremely pleasant place to explore on foot. Amble between the sights or take a cruise along the Rhine and gaze across the sprawling rural landscape that surrounds the city.
Wander the path from the town center. A gentle incline will lead you along a leafy path to the impressive Vaduz Castle, now the royal residence. Its grand turrets and towers are framed against a breathtaking alpine backdrop.
The center of town meanwhile holds great museums. One of the finest is the Art Museum. Inside this ultra-modern black basalt structure, find a brilliant selection of pieces by local artists Depero, Baldessari and Beuys. The overall focus is on the 19th century and beyond however, the Prince’s collection of Renaissance works is a wonderful exception to the rule.
The Postage Stamp Museum just down the road has a fascinating exhibit of old and artistic stamps while the Liechtenstein National Museum farther along offers an exciting journey into the heart and heritage of the country. Examine ancient jewelry and tools. Don’t miss the nature display area on the third floor. Take a closer look at the different environments that interact in this land and watch for the incredibly life-like golden eagle.
Vaduz is centrally located in Lichtenstein. Fly to Austria to the east or Switzerland to the west and catch a train or bus across the border. The restaurants in town serve predominantly Swiss food. Find lodgings in a few small hotels.
