Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Uken?
The best area to stay in Uken is around the main village of Yuwan, particularly along the coast and near the Yuwan Bay.

Yuwan is the heart of Uken and offers a central base for exploring the region. The area around Yuwan Bay is known for its access to the sea and the surrounding natural beauty of the Amami Oshima island. You'll find a few local eateries and shops here, providing a taste of local life.

For couples looking for a relaxing and private getaway, staying in one of the boutique accommodations dotted along the coastline near Yuwan Bay is ideal. These often provide stunning sea views and direct access to more secluded beaches, great for quiet strolls and enjoying the natural surroundings. Many properties here focus on privacy, with individual villas or cottages.

Solo travellers seeking a blend of relaxation and local interaction will find Yuwan a good fit. The small community means you can easily connect with locals and learn about the area's culture.
When is the best time to go to Uken?
While Uken is a beautiful destination year-round, the best time to visit is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) months.

Spring offers pleasant temperatures, typically ranging from 15°C to 25°C, making it ideal for exploring the outdoor attractions. You'll enjoy comfortable weather for hiking through the lush forests, visiting the observation decks for panoramic ocean views, and experiencing local festivals. The island's flora is also in bloom during this period, adding to its natural beauty.

Autumn also provides mild and comfortable weather, with temperatures similar to spring. This season is superb for water activities such as kayaking or paddleboarding in the calm bays, as the typhoon season typically ends by early September. The clear skies and gentle breezes make it an excellent time for photography and enjoying the island's natural scenery without the heat and humidity of summer.

The summer months (June to August) can be quite hot and humid, with temperatures often exceeding 30°C, and it's also the peak typhoon season.
