Tooele City is a peaceful town with scenic parks in the shadow of the dramatic Oquirrh Mountains. Just south of the Great Salt Lake, the town is known for its annual arts festival, its thriving copper industry and the Tooele Army Depot. Chat with locals to get a sense of the local culture.
Bring your kids to the Tooele Valley Railroad Museum, which displays artifacts that reveal the history of the railroad here. Admire Locomotive Number 11, which was built in 1910. Find out about the region’s industries of smelting and mining.
Play a few rounds at the Overlake Golf Course, a little north of the town centre. Snap photos of the wonderful views of mountains hovering over vast, green fields.
Travel north toward the Great Salt Lake and stop at the Benson Grist Mill. The building is partly restored and rebuilt as it appeared in 1851. Enter the building to see how a gristmill functioned. Attend events taking place here, including farmers markets and art exhibits.

The lake is far saltier than the ocean and a popular spot for migratory birds. Browse the items on display in the gift shop and learn about the local ecology in the visitor centre.
Attend the annual Tooele Arts Festival, which takes place over three days toward the end of June. Browse the various works of art from local vendors and artists, including paintings, jewellery, photographs and sculptures.
The town is in its namesake county in the southwestern outskirts of Salt Lake City in central Utah. Fly to Salt Lake City International Airport and drive southwest for about 30 miles (50 kilometres) to get here.
