What to do in Bihor County

The area now occupied by the Fortress of Oradea has been a defended position for nearly a millennium. Also known as Oradea Citadel or Cetatea Oradea, this spot is the key center for the city’s religious, military and administrative activities. Walk around the outside and admire its imposing red-brick exterior.

The Moon Church is named for an eye-catching sphere on its exterior that moves in accordance with the moon’s phases. Venture inside the church to discover beautiful iconostasis and frescos as well as the tombs of several important bishops. Save time to explore nearby Piaţa Unirii, one of Oradea’s main public squares.

Walk around the large Baroque Palace in the center of Oradea and marvel at its striking Viennese-style construction amid other equally impressive structures of the Baroque Complex. The building was initially constructed in the 1760s, burned to the ground within 10 years and immediately rebuilt.

The State Theatre, also known as the Queen Mary Theatre and the Szigligeti Theatre, is among the city’s most important heritage buildings. Built in the early 20th century, the theater offers a range of performances from Puccini to puppetry. Book tickets for a play, opera or dance performance.
