Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in The Braes?
The best area to stay in The Braes is primarily around Portree, which serves as the main hub and largest village on the Isle of Skye, offering the most comprehensive range of accommodation and amenities.

Portree is a picturesque harbour town, easily recognised by its colourful houses lining the waterfront. The main square, Somerled Square, is where you'll find most of the shops, cafes, and restaurants. It's an excellent base for exploring the wider Braes area and the rest of Skye, with good road connections to major attractions.

For families, Portree is an ideal choice due to its convenience. You'll find a good selection of family-friendly eateries and shops for essentials. The harbour offers boat trips, which are always popular with children and provide a different perspective of the coastline. The central location also means less travel time to many of Skye's famous natural sights.

Couples looking for a blend of convenience and access to natural beauty will also appreciate Portree. There are plenty of charming guesthouses and hotels, some with lovely views over the bay. In the evenings, you can enjoy a nice meal out and perhaps a drink in one of the local pubs.
When is the best time to go to The Braes?
The best time to go to The Braes is during the late spring and summer months, from May to September, for the most pleasant weather and longest daylight hours.

May and June offer lush landscapes and fewer crowds than the peak summer months. The weather is generally mild, making it ideal for outdoor activities like hiking and exploring the scenic lochs and glens. It's a great time for couples seeking a peaceful getaway with beautiful scenery.

July and August are the warmest months, great for those who want to experience The Braes at its most active, with many local events and festivals. The longer daylight hours allow for extended exploration of the hiking trails and picturesque villages. Families often find these months ideal for making the most of outdoor adventures.

September provides crisp air and the stunning colours of autumn. The crowds begin to thin, but the weather remains good for outdoor pursuits.
