Playa Avellanas Treehouse • Walk to the Beach

  • Welcome to our Playa Avellanas Treehouse, with 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms on a beautiful, privately gated half-acre property, just a short scenic walk to the gorgeous white-sand beach out front through the neighboring world-famous mangrove boardwalk.

    This is a truly unique tropical home, surrounded by beautiful gardens and nature. Both bedrooms have very comfortable beds with 1500-count Egyptian cotton sheets, ice-cold air conditioning, and Smart TVs, with extremely reliable high-speed WiFi throughout.

    There is a fully equipped kitchen and a comfortable living room with a sofa bed and a Smart TV, along with plenty of indoor and outdoor spaces to enjoy. Outside, there are three oversized hammocks that are perfect for relaxing and taking in the tropical surroundings.

    We are centrally located, making it an easy walk to a number of great nearby restaurants, bars, cafés, local shops, and two small grocery stores, making a rental car completely unnecessary.

    Enjoy our beautiful beaches, incredible sunsets, and all the tropical nature surrounding us, where you will see monkeys, parrots, and lots of other amazing wildlife.

    We’re happy to help arrange airport transportation, private drivers, tours, surf lessons, and surfboard rentals during your stay, and we include boogie boards with your rental free of charge.

    Whether you’re coming for a week, a month, or spending the winter here in Costa Rica, we know you’ll feel completely at home.

    The property has two other houses, each completely private and separate, sharing only the gated entrance.

This was one of the most unique and memorable places we’ve ever stayed.The treehouse feels completely immersed in nature while still being comfortable and thoughtfully designed. Waking up to the sounds of the jungle, soft natural light coming through the windows, and seeing monkeys and parrots right outside was an experience we’ll never forget.The location was incredible — an easy walk to Playa Avellanas beach, restaurants, and local shops, but the property itself felt peaceful, private, and hidden away from everything.We loved the handcrafted details throughout the home. The carved artwork, tropical woodwork, and overall design made the space feel artistic, warm, and authentic to Costa Rica. It truly felt like staying somewhere special instead of a typical vacation rental.The beds were very comfortable, the AC worked great in the bedrooms, and the WiFi was strong enough for remote work and streaming without any issues.One of our favorite parts of the stay was relaxing in the hammocks after long beach walks and sunsets. The entire property has a calm energy that makes it easy to slow down and fully enjoy the experience.Ben was an outstanding host — extremely helpful, responsive, and knowledgeable about the area. He gave us great recommendations and made everything feel easy and welcoming from start to finish.If you’re looking for a peaceful, walkable, nature-filled stay in Playa Avellanas, this place is truly special. Ben bring such a great host really makes this property. He checked in on us prior to arrival and throughout our stay with helpful info. He knew we were travelling with kids and left boogie boards out for us to use. He also learned it was our daughter's birthday and gave her a small gift. It is a rustic property and we appreciated the opportunity to stay somewhere so unique on our trip. We spent some time chilling in the hammocks with a lovely warm breeze blowing through. The walk to the beach along the boardwalk through the mangroves is very cool and the beach was fabulous for boogie boarding and sunsets.

From our initial arrival, Ben was extremely welcoming and helpful. The property feels safe and is in a fabulous location for access to a stunningly beautiful beach. Ben set us up with easy beach access via the property across the street. We loved their restaurant and ate their several times. It was fun being amongst the howler monkeys! We spent 2 days on the beach and had reserved Lola’s restaurant at sunset (incredible!) and then booked beach chairs there the next day and enjoyed the amenities. Ben checked in on us several times and wanted to make sure we were enjoying ourselves and had everything we needed. He even offered to be on hand if any quandaries popped up in our next location during our stay in Costa Rica. The property is rustic and gives a jungle-like experience.

Great Treehouse

We stayed at the treehouse for 3 nights and had a wonderful time. The location is very close to the beach and local shops/restaurants. Ben was very good at getting back to me for anything we needed. Loved having the host cats hang out with us.

What a beautiful hidden gem this is! Ben is the most gracious and kind host you could ever wish for who truly delights in his guests’ happiness. He has an amazing lush and serene property that is walking distance from a stunning soft sand beach with consistent waves for all to enjoy. The house was lovely. It is a mix of a rustic experience with touches of luxury sprinkled throughout. It is clear that Ben takes pride in his property. Enough outdoor hammocks for each of us, incredible stone bathroom, a/c units in the bedrooms for a cool night of sleep. The area is lovely. People with carts selling snow cones on the beach, a mix of upscale and typical restaurants with a relaxed feel throughout. We hope to return one day.

Wonderful host!!

We really loved our stay at the treehouse, and Ben was a wonderful host. It was a perfect place to have two small families stay on the same property but in separate houses. The beach wasn’t far and Ben was very helpful with recommendations of restaurants and also in setting up our airport transportation. We had a wonderful Christmas vacation!

Great time in Avellanas!

Stayed here with 3 others and found the location to be very accommodating. The location fit our needs with respect to private parking, security, and location to the beach. We were also able to cook meals in the kitchen which added to the convenience. Avellanas is a great beach town and the beach was a short walk away. It was nice lounging around in the hammock and enjoying the scenery. I would gladly go back.

Worth it.

Really enjoyed this tree house. Ben was a great host! He was very responsive to our questions and had great tips for what to do in the area. The actual house comfortably slept the four of us and had ample room for us to lounge and enjoy the weather. I had a great time traveling in Costa Rica, and this location was my favorite!

A week in paradise

We began communicating with Ben several months out before our vacation. He was very prompt in responding and answered any and all questions for us. When we arrived, everything was set up and ready for us. It was very enjoyable. This is not a five star hotel room, but very accommodating, very close to a wonderful beach and within driving distances of shops and restaurants. It was a great place to stay. If you do go, you must at least take a nap in the hammocks. They are wonderful.

Fun Tree House Property

This house was a lot of fun and in a good location that is close to a beautiful beach. Ben was an amazing host. He checked up on us, gave us excellent recommendations on things to do and places to eat, gave us access to the beautiful boardwalk accessing the beach, and most of all was extremely nice. The house is a fun Costa Rican house also. It has two levels and had hammocks outside. There is also a small loft on a third level. The house is located inside a locked gate, which is nice for security. We appreciated the stay.

A wonderful jungle/beach adventure!

Ben met us and welcomed us and showed us around. He gave us great ideas for meals and beach activities, even bringing us a boogie board. Howler monkeys all around in the trees. Two charming cats welcomed us too. The treehouse is a bit rustic but truly a great Costa Rican experience! Our host Ben even joined us for breakfast at the local restaurant. Loved getting to know him!! The mangrove walk to the beach is magical just after sunset and Lola’s restaurante on the beach was a great hangout place with a fun vibe and great food! Highly recommend for the adventurous souls!

Tree House Stay

Our stay at this charming property was simply wonderful! Host Ben was exceptional! Literally the best VRBO host we've ever had. He was incredibly responsive, friendly, and went above and beyond to ensure our comfort. His attention to detail and willingness to help made a big difference. We felt well taken care of throughout our stay.The property itself had everything we needed for a comfortable and enjoyable stay. The AC in the sleeping spaces was excellent, providing a cool and refreshing environment, which made our nights very comfortable. The hammocks for morning coffee and reading was a really nice touch as well.I will say this after reading other reviews on the property. You are not at a resort! If you require resort amenities this is not for you, but the tree house was perfect for us.You could walk to the beach, but we drove, Ben told us where and how to park and we found it much much easier than had we walked.Overall, we highly recommend this property for anyone looking to experience a charming, rustic getaway with a host who truly cares about their guests' experience.

March in the Tree House

We spent all of March 2025 in the treehouse. Our host Ben is a great host. Very responsive, checked in on us routinely and was great at making transportation arrangements for us to go on excursions outside the are. The house was clean when we arrived and the bed was very comfortable. The air in the bedroom worked well and allowed comfortable sleep during very warm days. If you are seeking luxury, the treehouse is not for you. It is a bit primitive and minimalistic. But if you want quiet relaxation and want a beautiful covered second story outdoor veranda, this is the place. There were 2 markets within walking distance and so were multiple restaurants and cafes with a bonus gelato store right next door. The beach was about a 20 minute walk on a boardwalk through the mangroves. The boardwalk is a bit rustic and did have multiple trip hazards so care should be taken. But very doable for us. We enjoyed many sunsets on the Pacific shore. We loved our time in The CR. Thanks Ben for a great time away.

Rustic Treehouse

The Host Ben is very responsive and kind. I wanted to experience living among the Ticos and we loved it. This place is unique and cozy for the 4 of us girls. There are some minor upgrades needed but we are so easygoing that it was not a bother. We survived a huge thunderstorm and no power for just a couple hours. The property has 2 cats. Also each bedroom has air conditioning and we enjoyed Netflix in the evening. This area is definitely a surf town and several restaurants walking distance. Lola’s was a 10 minute walk. Ben gave us passes to enter via Las Olas in order to get to the beach which was a very impressive walk because we saw monkeys and crabs. At the beac we boogey board and rained a little but that did not bother us. Tamarindo is about a 30 minute drive and that was an amazing experience. We drank, danced and laughed. We met Ben’s friend Jeff and he helped us girl get to know a little more of Playas Avellanas. We ate at La Tia and the Pinto Tico was delicious. I really enjoyed our experience in Costa Rica.

We did not want to stay in a resort in Costa Rica. We wanted a more nature oriented vacation, and that's exactly what we got.First, Ben, the host was amazing! Anything we wanted/needed, he was there for us. You won't find a better host ANYWHERE!Second, the animals around were fantastic! I've worked with animals my entire adult life and that's what I wanted. We saw monkeys, macaws, parrots, mot mot and other brightly colored birds right from our balcony!!! The house itself was very nice. Again, not luxury accommodations, but everything you need. The beach was a 15 minute walk either down the road or over a very cool, but slightly awkward (some of the boards could use replacing, but were still stable) bridge through the mangroves. The beach itself was beautiful and uncrowded with shaded areas to sit. The beach restaurant/bar, Lola's, was fabulous! Overall, a great stay and perfect for nature/animal lovers like us!!

Ben was an amazing host! He was kind, welcoming and incredibly helpful with everything. We were fortunate to have a whole month there so we could really slow down and appreciate the Pura Vida spirit. We enjoyed our little "tree house" thoroughly. It felt very authentically Costa Rican, warm, earthy and full of heart. We spent at least an hour a day under the fans on the top porch in the Hammocks! We saw monkeys in our yard most days! The most incredible part of our stay was the magical Playa Avellanas and all of the friends we made there. We miss it already!!

Great authentic stay in Avellanas

Very good location for surf beach access. Its nice to see original Costa Rican houses are still available to stay at! The host was great with communication.

Location was good, looked forward to it. But the place was completely unacceptable. Everything was filthy. No dish towels to contemplate cleaning the dirty dishes. That didn't matter much, the fridge wouldn't cool anything. Sinks were filthy. Shower area filthy. Weird electrical buzzing noise. Air conditioning was useless. Doesn't matter, the second bed in the main living area was impossible to even attempt to cool as there was no way to close the windows completely in all but the bedroom. There were 3 paper towels left, so even if we wanted to use those to clean a little to prepare some snacks it would have been insufficient. The gate padlock was bulletproof but that meant that going for dinner or to the beach would have been more like a prison entry and exit process than anything practical. The latches for all of the doors pierced through metal screening, presumably to I effectively keep bugs and critters out. Opening the garbage revealed how ineffective when plenty of interesting creatures popped out. We left within minutes. This is a clear fraud. Steer clear. Neighbours we met as we left told us this is a very well known issue, a stain on the community which does have some excellent lodging.

Kitchen was old, not well equipped, lighting poor, ants everywhere especially at night. There were no shops near by, you needed a car to get to them. The gordwalk was treacherous , old and dangerous for walking, wooden boards cracked, missing and installed far aoard. Beds were nice and clean but floors were old and looking not very clean. stoned wall in the bathrooms was rough, dirty and full of insects. Shower heads were poor.

Ben is a fabulous host! He was so friendly, very quick to respond to questions, and very helpful. He had great suggestions for restaurants, helpful tips for the area, and even helped set us up with a boat tour.The treehouse itself has a wonderfully rustic charm about it. We enjoyed our morning coffees on the upstairs porch, watching the birds and monkeys in the trees. The hammocks were a great place to spend a quiet afternoon. The bed was super comfortable. We enjoyed both eating out as well as cooking for ourselves. The kitchen has everything you need to cook meals if you choose to do so. As far as location goes, it is centrally situated. The beach is a short walk away, as are the restaurants. And even with this central location, it is a secluded little paradise. We absolutely loved it, and we would love to visit again!! Thanks Ben!
