Built in the 14th century as the presbytery for the adjacent church at the time when the popes were residing in Avignon, the stone spiral staircase leads you up two flights to the penthouse Apartment of Angels - L'Appartement des Anges. During its recent transformation the original 14th century stone windows, archways and timber beams were discovered and now feature in this magnificent apartment in the heart of beautiful Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. (You can read more about the history of the building below). Decorated in Provençal style and furnished with both new and antique pieces the oak floors in the spacious living dining area and bedrooms combine well with the exposed stone walls. The kitchen has classic timber and travertine finishes and is well equipped with modern appliances including a Nespresso coffee machine. The bedrooms have comfortable hotel quality beds with crisp cotton sheets and Provençal bedcovers. Each bedroom has a travertine ensuite with large walk-in shower, basin and toilet, white fluffy towels and quality soaps provided. La chambre des Plumes (bedroom of Feathers) has a 180cm wide king bed which can be separated into 2 x 90cm beds. La chambre des Anges (bedroom of Angels) and La chambre des Fleurs (bedroom of Flowers) each have 1 x 160cm wide bed. The apartment is tucked away on a quiet lane in the historic centre of St Rémy, just steps from cafes, restaurants, bars, the Wednesday market, boutiques, museums, and galleries. Bakeries, butchers, grocery and wine stores are nearby. Parking - Guests can have access to our dedicated parking space in a secure lot located about 200 metres away. After your reservation is confirmed more details can be provided. There is also a free public carpark behind the Police Municipale in avenue de la Liberation. Metre parking can often be found in the streets nearby or in the carpark opposite the church. You need to take a ticket from the machine and display it on your dashboard. The first 45 minutes are free and then it's 2€ per hour 9am-7pm. It's free from 7pm-9am. Be aware of any "stationnement interdit" signs as it's forbidden to park here on the days/times shown, especially on Wednesdays due to the weekly market. More about the history of the building... This unique building was originally the presbytery of the 14th-century church, once home to the parish priest. At the top of the spiral staircase, you'll find the original bell tower, which would have featured a decorative metal frame and a bell used to call parishioners to worship and mark time for the village. The bell tower predates the church spire, which was donated by the Popes during the Avignon Papacy—a time when this region held great religious and political importance. These papal contributions highlight the historic connection between Saint-Rémy and the Papal seat in Avignon. Today, the building has been thoughtfully renovated into two charming apartments, preserving the original architectural details while adding modern comfort. Guests renting this penthouse apartment (or "Alchemy" which is both apartments together - 5 bed/5 bath) have exclusive access to the bell tower rooftop terrace, a magical spot to watch the sunset and soak in panoramic views of the town. In the ground floor apartment, there is a 14th-century well, no longer in use but beautifully preserved as a decorative tribute to the building’s long and storied past. It’s truly a one-of-a-kind place to stay—steeped in history, full of character, and perfectly located in the heart of Provence. You climb a winding stone staircase and two flights up you open a large old wooden door to discover a beautifully decorated and renovated apartment that retains all the character of the original building. The comfortable en-suite bedrooms each have lovely touches and modern bathrooms with walk-in showers. The kitchen was well equipped and we enjoyed using it for some light cooking. Added bonuses were the little side balcony under the atrium and the terrace on the roof. The mistral was blowing while we were there, so we unfortunately weren’t able to enjoy the terrace, but we enjoyed drinks and hors d’ouvres on the little balcony. It was wonderful being in the heart of St. Remy with bakeries, restaurants, groceries and shops at your fingertips and free parking in a lot a short distance away. Also, the excellent Wednesday market is practically right out your door! Karen has done a fantastic job of turning this old building into a truly unique and special place to stay. The apartment was beautiful and in an excellent and quiet location right in the village. Every detail was thought of and we had everything we needed. We loved the rooftop balcony with great view of the sunrise, moon rising and sunset! The beds were very comfortable and the living space and bathrooms were gorgeous! It is beautifully decorated, even prettier than the pictures, yet still so comfortable. The apartment retains much of it’s original charm while providing modern amenities such as an updated kitchen and three updated bathrooms. The rooftop deck was a real treat. It is in a great location right in the center of St. Remy. Karen is a terrific host. She communicated with us well prior to our stay and during our stay so that check in and check out were so easy. Karen’s apartment is wonderful; with the 14th Century walls and doorways, we were surronded by history. The apartment is spacious, with comfortable bedrooms and large modern bathrooms. The kitchen has everything you need. And, what a treat to be able to walk up to the roof-top terrace where you are face-to-face with the church steeple and can survey the city centre rooftops and surrounding mountains - and even see Avignon in the distance. Everything in the city centre is less than five minutes away. To top it off, Karen was so friendly and helpful, and even arranged a visit to her friend, Jean Paul’s, Chateauneuf du Pape winery. There can’t be a better place to stay in Saint-Remy! ##### Charles B. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to stay in a truly historical building—although the amenities are absolutely 21st century! Karen did an amazing job restoring this beautiful apartment and no details were spared. Our family of 5 adults were very comfortable and especially appreciated the well appointed kitchen and en suite bathrooms. The location in historic St. Remy is perfect. We walked everywhere! At the end of each day we climbed the stone stairway to our private rooftop patio where we shared a bottle of wine and breathtaking sunsets. We are so grateful to Karen for sharing this gem.
