Wish I'd stayed at the Holiday Inn Express
I originally booked the St. Ignace Holiday Inn Express for a one-day stay before taking the ferry to the island. But I saw all the 10 star reviews for this place, so I decided to give it a try. This is nothing more than an old roadside motel with a few minor upgrades (flowers, Keurigs, touch-lighted mirrors, millennial-grey linoleum floors). There's no flickering "vacancy" or "Free HBO" sign out front. But the rooms are tiny, the walls are thin, the pillows are thinner, and the mattresses are like straw. Multiple times I rapped my knuckles on the walls as I thrashed around the bed. Once I was able to fall asleep, the people coming out of the bar/restaurant at close (2:00) woke me up. Then the neighbor's 5:15 alarm. Then the guy with the dually and boat trailer starting up his truck at 6:00. Everything came right through the walls. The bathroom is about the size of that on an airplane. The shower is the size of a vertical coffin. I had to shut off the water and step out to lather up. The restaurant next door was a bust. We sat down for dinner after arriving, waited 20 minutes, then gave up and left. It was obviously understaffed, and the few servers working seemed to be catering to their locals. We didn't bother trying breakfast there the next morning. If you want the retro experience of a roadside motel, then have at it. I'll happily spend the extra $50-$100 to stay at a modern hotel with quiet rooms, comfortable beds and free hot breakfast.

Sunset Motel of St. Ignace, MI is a flower garden!
We were delighted by being surrounded by beautiful flowers! The owners were very friendly and gave us recommendations on things to see and do and their personal favorite eating places. Our room felt very homey and was spotless.

It is a smaller roadside motel. Extremely clean and cute. The owner and family live on property and are very proud of the place. They plant a gorgeous flower display every year. If you love flowers it’s a must to stay there. Wish I could add a picture.

This is an updated roadside motel that retains some oold school charm like knotty pine paneling and parking right outside your door. The proprieter has the most amazing knack with flowers you will ever see. The gardens are spectacular. There is a little pub next door with great food, drinks and service.

We stayed at the Sunset based on positive reviews and reasonable price. It did not disappoint. The place is definitely Old School with small rooms and just the basics. But those basics included a fridge and even a microwave, something our $600/night room at Navy Pier did NOT. And of course the flowers and landscaping were breathtaking. I would definitely stay there again and would recommend it to others.

Beautiful flower gardens on motel property, room very clean. Motel owner was very helpful and accommodating. Recommend the restaurant next door (Johnny’s) for a hearty breakfast. I would highly recommend the Sunset Motel.

Lovely Motel!
Beautiful flowers, a cottage atmosphere, comfortable beds, very nice staff & a clean quiet room with all necessities available made us very happy! The shower was a bit small but manageable. Great location for St. Ignace activities including access to the ferries. Would definitely recommend!

the room was small but super nice. It had everything that you wound need in a motel. The flowers around the motel were beautiful. Anniversary weekend
We just wanted a nice, quiet place to stay overnight for our anniversary. This place was just that. A very nice, very clean and pleasant place to stay. The staff was very friendly, super clean and the flowers!! You have to see them. The pictures do not do them justice. Just beautiful! We would definitely stay again.
