About this property
Entire place
You'll have the entire cabin to yourself and will only share it with other guests in your party.
This unforgettable cabin is nestled privately in the woods and provides a top level lookout, you can even watch the stars from your bed, watch the storms roll in, eagles and swans fly by, and the wild animals pass through. Design inspired by a fire watchmen's tower. Three levels, the top and bottom levels for sleeping, separated by the center level for privacy -the center level for communing/eating and cooking. Perfect for a single couple or couples/families traveling together. The bottom level has a beautiful wood stove, carved wood wall decor, a cozy queen bed, a private and custom made tile bath/shower with double shower heads, there is a futon and TV with a DVD player. The upper level boasts a deck that wraps around the entire cabin overlooking a vast area to spot wildlife and stars. There are 2 queen beds, a little love seat, TV and another custom bathroom with a double headed shower. Catch the sunset over the pines, or the view with a cup of coffee on the deck. In the Winter you can see the sledding hill right from the kitchen as the family cruises by in snow sleds and wake up to deer feeding at the base of the hill. The center level has a fantastic full kitchen lined with windows and big dining table to bring everyone together. Stocked with all eating and cooking utensils, walking & ATV trails, a little lake to paddle around on in our paddled boats, and beautiful grounds (200 acres) to roam around on. If you plan on using the futons as beds- you must bring your own linens for using them.
Activities in the WINTER: We provide 2 pairs of snow shoes, 2 snow sleds, ciders and cocoa, and holiday decor if you are feeling in the spirit. Perfect Winter cabin rental. My absolute, favorite time of year for this cabin. The cabin is right next to a great hill to sled on, you can watch the family sled while you have a hot cider! We feed the deer in the winter so throughout the day you may see the deer come right close to the cabin to feed! They are amazing to watch! The snowmobile trail is a quick quarter mile ride away, you do not have to trailer your sleds. There is also a great ice fishing lake one mile down the road- Moose Lake. So bring your portables or wheel houses! Light up the wood fire stove and play the provided board games, read a book and enjoy the sunsets, cross fingers for a fresh snowfall so you can wake up to a winter wonderland. The perfect cozy getaway to nestle in for a memory making family getaway that is flat out, out of the ordinary. The deer visiting alone is the coolest thing to see:)))) This is also GREAT for snowmobilers to stay right on the trail and gather at night for a big meal. ATVers are also welcome and can enjoy our trails on site or travel 25 minutes to four wheel the epic ATV trails south of Zerkel in White Earth.
SUMMER VISITS: Explore these big woods and many trails and discover vast amounts of flora and fauna. Hunt mushrooms in the spring and all the other beautiful treasures the forest has to offer. Watch stunning sunsets from the deck, picnic or have a family reunion potluck at the pavilion. Enjoy the paddled boats for free to all guests and tool around our little fishing lake. Not a swimming lake, but great to spot turtles and wildlife, another excellent spot to catch the sunset and maybe even some fire flies. Have a camp fire, we have wood stocked on site and grill out if you would like! There are many fishing lakes in the area too. Walk, bike or ATV our trails. Bring the kids to the little playground, play horse shoes, or badmitten, or even bring your own favorite yard games:) We are 25 minutes away from Itasca State Park and old downtown Bemidji. Itasca has the headwaters of the great Mississippi that you can walk across, take a ferry around the lake, rent bicycles for their MANY bike trails or rent boats, eat at the lodge or swim at their beautiful beach that has showers and bathrooms. In downtown Bemidji there are so many events throughout the summer: fairs, dragon boat festivals, art festivals, holiday celebrations and more. Downtown is great for walking, eating great food, shopping and taking pictures by the famous Paul Bunyan and Babe statues.

The cabin is amazing! Perfect place for our family of 6. We loved the 360 porch on the second level for watching sunsets and rises the fire pit area was great to stay out late and watch stars.
I loved walking down to the lake early in the morning to observe the swan swimming and otters playing.
We spent time in Bemidji at the state parks and the cabin was a great place to come back to cook great meals and relax after a day of hiking and exploring.
Annie was an excellent host and did everything to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable.
There is nothing about this place that isn’t absolutely beautiful in every way. The home was unique and so comfortable, decorated and finished with such care. The location, so remote and quiet. The 360°views from the upstairs deck, numerous windows or just walking around the carefully landscaped yard were amazingly beautiful! Cell reception and internet were just enough to keep up on things. It was good to get away from the distraction of technology. Our host Annie was on the spot to help us get a little internet service to watch the news. I wish we could have stayed longer to take a few walks down the trails and to explore the area. I’m coming back for sure. This is the perfect place to relax, reflect, and appreciate the wonderful world and country God created.
We stayed here for my daughter’s wedding. Everything from check-in to checkout was so convenient! Property was beautiful and cabin was clean. Wish we would have had more time to enjoy it.
The host was very responsive and helpful. The cabin is lovely and it is such a peaceful setting! We had fun sledding and working on a jigsaw puzzle. We also found some Christmas decorations to put up for an extra festive touch.
Super cabin in the woods. Awesome three level cabin that allowed my family to enjoy the outdoors. Close to Lake Itaska and Bemidji. Family just had a super time at the Refuge. Thanks
The place was beautiful! It has lots of windows and lovely views in every direction, and it's full of different comfortable places to sit and read. The kitchen has just about everything you might need, down to cheese graters and a double boiler. On the top floor, the wraparound deck is even nicer than it looks in the pictures. It was the perfect place to stay while visiting Lake Itasca State Park.
Annie answered all our questions before we got there (and saved us half an hour by warning us that a county road was under construction and telling us how to go around), and even though we didn't need anything after we arrived, it was clear that help with anything large or small was only a call away.
I recommend this place to anyone and hope to have the chance to go back someday!
Everything about this property was so well thought out and beyond expectations. The owner was fantastic to communicate with. The area is incredible and so is the view. I definitely want to go back again!
We loved our stay at the Refugee cabin! The property was well maintained, clean, and spacious. We loved the grounds, the atv trails were a hit for the adults and kids, and the accessibility to towns close by. Annie was responsive and quick to communicate when needed. Highly recommend!
I loved this cabin so much! Beautiful views and very secluded. Just what my husband and I were looking for. Very clean, comfy beds, bonfire pit with plenty of wood and hiking trails. Thank you Annie!
Wish we would have stayed longer. Great family escape! The cabin was beautiful and has everything you need. The land is amazing and beautiful. Great fishing, Close to state parks
We had a two night stay at this beautiful property. The home was clean and unique in design. Three story building with a wrap around deck on the top floor.
It’s on a quiet area with an RV camp ground across the pond. Walk paths all around to explore and take adventures. It’s within 25 mins of bemidji and itasca state park. Both great places to explore.
Overall I had a great time with my family and we got to explore a lot of northern Minnesota. Owner was great with communication and even called after our stay to check up and thanked us for the staying . Would love to come back in the summer season when weather is much nicer.
My wife, I and my parents spent two relaxing nights at this really cool cabin located away from everything. The place is modern and updated without losing that cabin feel. Kitchen has most everything needed as my wife cooked us a great dinner on one of the nights. Bemidji is about thirty minutes away if you want someone else to do the cooking. No wifi, no satellite or cable tv (there is a wide variety of dvds) just a great view out the windows. Weather didn't allow for any star-gazing, but the fireflies certainly put on a show! Finally, Annie makes herself available if you need anything and she has all kinds of recommendations.
My wife and I truly enjoyed the serenity of the property. A couple mornings, we took a canoe trip around the lake, enjoying the ducks, turtles, heron and even spotted a beaver. With the headwaters just 20 minutes right down the road, it is very convenient to head down to hike and bike at Itasca State Park. We also enjoyed biking around Lake Bemidji and hiking in Lake Bemidji State Park. Our most enjoyable time was relaxing on the wrap around deck. We ate breakfast and dinner out out on the deck most days and enjoyed quiet time reading, as well. The patio with the grill and fire pit was also a great plus.
Everything we needed was provided for us. The kitchen was supplied with all the utensils that we needed and we cooked most of our meals onsite. The bedrooms and bathrooms are spacious and well supplied. The couple of times we asked about something, we got a response fairly quickly. The only negative, but also can be a positive, is the cell reception is very spotty, but great if you really want to disconnect.
We definitely hope to return in the future.
