Gera
8.4 out of 10, Very good, (24 reviews)
"This is a beautiful old hotel property. It has great bones and the rooms have been updated and modernized nicely. That said, there are some very quirky aspects to the property. Firstly, there is no reception - just an automated machine that provides a key card. This means that there is no one to ask about parking, amenities etc. The second thing is that no one speaks English at all. The cleaning staff was very sweet but could not speak a word. We had to use Google Translate for all...

"The spa, gym, and lake views are excellent. The hotel has a very 90's feel and no room service (this was a bummer as we had a lake view room and wanted to stay in and relax). The beirgarten by the water has excellent food, although it closes at 930pm (as does the only restaurant on site (a buffet). The place was comfortable for 1 dayx the lake location and sauna were exactly what we wanted"

Top Schömberg Hotel Reviews

Hotel Schloss Schweinsburg

Hotel Schloss Schweinsburg

10/10 Excellent
"Beautiful hotel set in nice grounds. The main building used to be a palace. We were allocated a room in the adjoining building. When we first arrived, we were told that they were full, despite us having booked in advance. But this was soon sorted out. Our room was clean and tidy and spacious. It had a slanted ceiling right above the bed, so we had to be careful getting in and out. The wifi was not very strong in the room but luckily we did not really need it for anything special. The restaurant offered a buffet or the a la carte menu. The buffet looked a bit lacking so we chose the menu and the food was excellent. We can highly recommend the pork schnitzel and the salmon. Parking free and on site. All in all, a lovely place to stay."

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Schomberg?
The best area to stay in Schomberg is the town centre, particularly around the historic Marktplatz (Market Square).

This area is the heart of Schomberg, characterised by its historic half-timbered houses, cobbled streets, and the prominent St. Michaelis Kirche (St. Michael's Church). The Marktplatz itself is a central point, often hosting local markets and events, and is surrounded by a selection of cafes and traditional German restaurants. It's a very walkable area, making it easy to explore on foot.

Couples looking for a relaxing and culturally rich getaway will find the town centre ideal. They can enjoy leisurely strolls through the historic streets, visit local museums, and dine at charming restaurants, all within easy reach of their accommodation. The proximity to the Schomberg Castle ruins also offers a romantic backdrop for evening walks.

For solo travellers interested in history and local culture, staying near the Marktplatz provides convenient access to the town's main attractions and public transport links for exploring the wider Thuringian region.
When is the best time to go to Schomberg?
The best time to visit Schomberg is during the late spring (May to early June) and early autumn (September to October) when the weather is pleasant and the natural beauty of the region is at its peak.

During late spring, the landscape around Schomberg comes alive with lush greenery and blooming wildflowers. The days are comfortably warm, superb for exploring the hiking trails and enjoying outdoor activities without the intensity of summer heat. This period is ideal for couples who enjoy scenic walks and discovering the local flora.

Early autumn brings crisp air and stunning autumnal colours to the Thuringian Forest. The changing leaves create a picturesque backdrop for photography and leisurely drives. This season is particularly appealing to those who appreciate nature's artistry and prefer cooler temperatures for their excursions.
