This stunning alpine valley location offers year-round outdoor pursuits. Ski, hike, mountain bike and marvel at the views from the top of a glacier.

With hiking, biking, climbing and skiing, Sankt Leonhard im Pitztal offers plenty of reasons to visit. Explore the picturesque collection of hamlets and villages occupying a valley floor surrounded by alpine mountains.

Typically, find snow here from September until late spring. Slalom down the pistes of Pitztal Glacier, the highest glacier in the Tyrol, and ice climb its frozen waterfalls. Ski and snowboard at Rifflsee, also part of Pitztal’s mountain sport area. Find runs for beginners, intermediates and experts in and around Sankt Leonhard im Pitztal. Thrill to the high speeds of the 4-mile (6-kilometre) toboggan run at Hochzeiger.

Enjoy other snow-based activities away from the slopes. Cross-country ski along the valley, take a horse-drawn sleigh ride or go ski walking in the mountains. View the peaks and valleys from the highest cable car in Austria. The Wildspitzbahn reaches an altitude of 11,286 feet (3,440 metres) above sea level. Have coffee at the outdoor terrace of the visitor centre perched on top of the Pitztal Glacier.

When the snow melts, you’ll find many more activities to enjoy. Hike along steep paths and forested roads past mountain lakes. Cycle up asphalt mountain roads reaching heights of about 5,000 feet (1,524 metres) above sea level. Adventurous types can go bungee jumping, paraglide or choose from more than 150 climbing trails.

Have Tyrolean sausage or strudel in a mountain resort or in restaurants, bars and cafés dotted around the valley.

Reach the town by train, rental car or taxi from one of six airports. The airport closest is Innsbruck, 34 miles (55 kilometres) away. You can also catch a bus from there. The farthest airport is in Munich in Germany at approximately 165 miles (265 kilometres) away. If you’re driving, purchase a toll sticker at a gasoline station to be allowed to drive on Austrian motorways and highways.

At any time of year, a vacation in Sankt Leonhard im Pitztal offers superlative scenery and a range of outdoor leisure pursuits and adventure sports.
