The first and only basilica in Pondicherry is a masterpiece of neo-Gothic architecture that is adorned with superb stained glass.
View the figure of Christ that stands on a pile of rocks in front of the striking red towers of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Enter to find a lavish altar and stained-glass windows that show each of the 28 saints relevant to the church.
Completed in 1908 by French missionaries, this colorful church is a popular pilgrimage site for Roman Catholic Christians. The twin bell towers that dominate the main façade are 59 feet (18 meters) tall. The square edges and sharp spires on these are typical of the neo-Gothic design. You will instantly notice that these features contrast with the statue of Jesus that stands in front of the church in a golden robe.
Approach the arched main portal and notice a bright motif of Christ that is encircled by terracotta. Higher still is a small figure while to your right you can see Mary and Joseph cradling a baby.
Step inside where you will be treated to a high ceilinged vault that is decorated with flowing terracotta patterns. The whole room is supported by 24 thick columns while circular colored windows light up the building. Walk around and you will find an abundance of intricate stained-glass windows. Marvel at several chapters from the life of Christ and search for Joan of Arc among the 28 depictions of devout saints.
Wander to the far end of the church where you will find the altar, an impressive aspect of the building. White and gold patterning intertwines in front of a figure of the crucifixion. Angels stand guard on either side, with a larger statue set against the back wall just below the ceiling.
The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is just north of the city center near to Pondicherry Train Station. The church is open all week and there is no charge for entry.
