Grand Beach (Praia Grande) is among the liveliest of the many beautiful beaches of Angra dos Reis. This inviting stretch of golden sand sits between rainforest-clad hills and transparent water. It attracts everyone from groups of friends to families and tourists. Visit Grand Beach to swim in the inviting water, join tours to picturesque islands and see in the new year with party-loving locals.

The shimmering, shallow water is great for those that want to exercise or simply splash around along the shoreline. Buoys mark a designated swimming area, which keeps swimmers safe from speed boats and yachts. Sunbathing and beach volleyball are other favorite activities here.

After sunset the entire beach is illuminated, making it accessible for those that enjoy walking and swimming at night.

Guided tours and a taxi boat services depart from the beach to the nearby Ilha da Gipóia. On this island, relish the chance to sunbathe on paradisiacal beaches and spot an array of exotic fish species. Day tours to the secluded bays of Ilha Grande are also possible. Another option is to plan your own beach-hopping excursion by renting a boat with a driver and snorkeling equipment included.

The bars and restaurants at Grand Beach serve up a variety of food and drink. Place your order and then sit at the tables set up on the sand. During the peak summer months some bars play music well into the evening.

New Year’s Eve is a notably vibrant time to be here. Locals dress in white and celebrate the sea goddess Iemanja by tossing flowers into the sea.

Grand Beach is located about 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) southwest of Angra dos Reis’ city center. The most convenient way to get here is by taxi. Waterfront posadas offer laid-back accommodation options for those that want to stay overnight at the beach. Bonfim Beach and Vila Velha Beach are both less than a 5-minute drive away.

I liked the accommodation is staffed throughout day and night, and that you can leave your key there if you want to so you don’t need to worry about losing it when going out partying or to the beach. Staff was kind and the area is pretty convenient between beaches in Ipanema & Copabana. They changed towels everyday which I wasn’t expecting and thought was nice.

Staff was fantastic, great suggestions for what to do. Was a little disappointed with my room. I thought I’d paid for a balcony but got a patio instead so not much of a view. Beautiful property, food is excellent, I would definitely stay here again. It’s a great alternative to the beach. Lots of character and charm.
