A great building and nicely appointed. Enjoyed the self-check in and self-check out process. It was convenient to everywhere we wanted to go. We would definitely stay again.

Hotel was very cool - our room was great. I appreciated the texts letting us know about parking and checking in with us during our stay. I liked the bottle of water in our room and close to get places to eat. Try the wilder if you like gin drinks. Bed was comfy and we both slept great. Wouldn’t know the hotel was sold out it was nice and quiet. Nespresso machine in lobby for am with to go cups.

Stylish and very comfortable hotel. The Thaxter is a refreshing change from the corporate blandness of so many chain hotels. We would happily stay again.

Great boutique hotel option in the heart of historic Portsmouth. Staff is friendly and attentive. The spacious room (#15) was nicely furnished, with a comfortable king sized bed. Nespresso coffee and a tea pot in the room. A few more options in the lobby. Parking is an adventure is you don’t opt for valet—which isn’t available between 7 pm and 8 am. They provide maps of local lots. We will definitely book here next time!

Was a perfect location to walk around downtown. we went to a show at the music hall and we could not have been any closer! We loved it. The staff was aces, super helpful and friendly! From check in to check out we could not have been happier!

I enjoyed my stay at Hotel Thaxter. I arrived a bit late on my check-in day, but the self-check-in process was seamless. The hotel is newly renovated. I loved the decor as well as the location. Close to everything!

Stayed 1 night after watching a concert in town. We got in early so I texted and asked if we could check in early and they replied right away and said we could, which was super helpful. Beautiful building, nicely appointed. Also very clean!

This hotel was so cute and the room was amazing!!! It was so convenient and easy to get in and out of! They had all the little add ons and things that one would want at a boutique hotel. All the little touches matter to me!!! The environment was great and so well decorated and the whole energy was great! I will be coming again!!

I would’ve felt a lot safer with a inside bolt lock on the door, and there were no staff around

We do advertise as a self check in property but do have staff onsite between our office hours. If you can not find us, we're always a phone call away if needed! We hope to host a future stay. Great hotel
This a wonderful hotel in a really good location in the heart of cool downtown Portsmouth. Beautifully appointed with several lovely comunal rooms. My room quite comfortable with a sitting area and high quality bed and pillows. Many thoughtful touches - e.g., large bottle of delicious water (sounds silly, but true); swiveling TV with both cable and Roku (info put in to access home streaming services deletes automatically on checkout); actual instructions on how to work the TV so you don't have to spend a half hour figuring it out as in most hotels; keyless front door and room entry if you can remember the last 4 digits of your telephone number (the code) so there is no key to lose. No officious signs threatening arrest if you break any rules (you are politely asked not to steal the glass water bottles, however). Staffers are friendly and helpful. A very well-run and attractive hotel at a very reasonable price.

We travel a lot so to say this is one of our favorite hotels is a big deal. Gorgeous historic building, 1860. Staff was friendly and very helpful. The room was spacious and clean. Heated bathroom floors. Full length mirror (amazing how many places don't have this). Perfect location within walking distance to everything. Keyless entry for the building and the room. Fresh FREE water (not $15 a bottle like some places) for the room and refillable downstairs. Free snacks, tea, coffee and water downstairs. Our only dislikes were the pillows went flat as can be after 2 minutes and not bright enough lighting in the bathroom, but we would definitely stay again if we were in the area. They were in constant contact with recommendations for restaurants, things to do, checking on our stay...GREAT customer service. Note (we did not mind and new about the breakfast when booking), but no breakfast and no elevator.

Great inn at a perfect spot, accessible to many downtown Portsmouth attractions. The on-site Japanese restaurant was a great bonus. We had a fabulous meal without having to leave the hotel!

I really liked the room, and the staff was lovely. But the noise outside was really loud until about 2:00 am and awakened me several times with loud yelling and very drunk people screaming and kicking bottles down the road.
