Unique hotel, fun and cool vibe
Stayed with my husband and young son. We loved it. It was funny that ear plugs were provided, assuming that the hotel knows that the place can get noisy from people and music downstairs.

Cova Hotel in SFO
I am still there and it is a pain to send this review, because the internet cannot work more than 10s! I'd prefer to pay than have such a poor service! Otherwise, rooms are OK, not noisy, but the Tenderloin area is not a charming place in SFO (kids many beggars, taking crack in the street...). Non smoking hotel.

The ACE Hotel in Portland - in the Pearl District
The ACE Hotel in Portland is a must stay at location if you want to be in the Pearl District. Close to many restaurants and shopping, the ACE offers a nice place to lay your head. The beds are not entirely comfortable, but the boutique hotel is just that ... certainly not a Westin, but definitely ecclectic.

I would describe this hotel as having character. It is old and neat in a retro sort of way. The rooms are very small and have very limited accomodations. However, the location is one of the best in Portland, located one block off Burnside street in downtown.

Cool place to stay
I stayed at the Ace Hotel over Christmas. Because business was slow, I got a free upgrade to a better room without even asking. That was nice! The room itself was fairly spacious, clean and comfortable, but the comfort level suffers a bit from the building's past as the low-rent Clyde Hotel (before the Ace people bought and renovated it). The single-pane windows let in drafts, and that means the heater is constantly going on and off to compensate. Also, the tiled bathroom is unheated and can be pretty cold in a Portland winter, but it's probably really nice in the summer. I liked the comforter topped with a Pendleton blanket -- that was a nice Portland touch -- and the iPod compatible alarm-radio would've been great if the iPod hookup had actually worked. Fortunately, Portland has some great radio stations, and the Ace has tons of cable channels. The only real reservation I have about the place concerns a lack of security. Quite often, I'd come into the lobby at night and there would be no one at the front desk, which means that anyone could walk in off the street and go upstairs into the hallways whether they were staying at the hotel or not. Portland is fairly safe, but no city is free from crime altogether, and the situation made me a bit uneasy. More positives: The food available at all three eating places within the hotel is excellent. Stumptown Coffee isn't my favorite, but they've got excellent pastries, Kenny and Zuke's is an excellent deli, and Clyde Common has an awesome bar and quite good food. All in all, the Ace is a fine place to stay even though they could do a little better with the security situation, maybe finding some way to limit access to the upper floors and elevator without compromising the funky character of the hotel.

I had a very pleasent stay at the ACE-Hotel in Portland,Or.Just the way I like it,simple, clean, comfortable and good people. Restaurant serving good food and coffeeshop providing baked goods are in the same building. The location of the hotel allows plenty of shoping, entertainment and business activities in close proximity.

Cool Hipster Hotel
The Ace has done a great job of turning an old skid-row hotel into a hipster haven. It's been done up really cute with lots of thoughtful, creative and cool touches. But here's the rub... Be aware when booking that the rooms have no toilet or shower... So plan on trundling down the hallway for many of your needs. This is a great hotel for a vacation visit to the Rose City. It's just a couple short blocks from Powell's Books main location and also close to downtown eateries and nightspots, but I would not recommend it for the budget business traveler.

Pretty cool shared bathroom sucks at 3a.m.
The hotel is pretty cool. But, it sucks to put on your clothes at 3 am after a night of drinking only to find that one of the bathrooms is out of order, and the other one's door has a broken lock. Also, don't try to sit down in the restaurant just to have a beer. They frown upon that there, and there are no open seats at the bar either. Still... I'd recommend the hotel for the sheer simplicity and atmosphere. You might want to splurge and spend for a private bathroom.

There's a Stumptown Coffee connect to it. Need I say more?! But seriously, this is a great hotel in a great location of downtown. I will be staying here each time I return to Portland until I move there for good.

the best, but not that comfortable
Beds and pillows are the worst and the air conditioning didn't work, until we asked them to look at it which took us a day, but they fixed it in two minutes. They are very helpful at the desk. Love the hotel, but it isn't for everyone.

The ACE hotel, located down town Protland
The Hotel has a historic look about it. It was convenently located. We were within walking distance of the show that we attendinding. The room we had seemed to be on the small side. I really did not care for a shared bathroom, especially in middle of the night. The bathrooms seemed very clean, almost bigger then the room I stayed in. I felt it was over priced. It did have good heating & air conditioning. I thought the bed to be too firm.

Love The Charm
This hip hotel is a wonderful place to stay, especially if you like "different". The rooms are comfortable, the staff is friendly & helpful, the hotel is in a great location. What makes The Ace Hotel stand out is that it is an historical building and therefore quite unique. The owners have done a great job with renovation. I like it that guests "hang out" in the lobby on the comfortable couches visiting with other guests, reading, on the computer, etc. The fact that I had to share a bathroom was no problem. I never once had to wait to use it. Both bathrooms on my floor were roomy, clean & comfortable. The hotel even provided robes for the guests. That's why I say if you want a hotel that's out of the box, stay at Ace!

Funky, hip Portland Hotel in great neighborhood
Stayed here at the end of July. I ended up booking a a "shared single" room, meaning a shared bathroom/shower. I was hesistant at first about not having my own bathroom but turned out not to be a big deal at all. I never had to wait to use the bathroom or shower, even in the morning. They give you a nice robe to use during stay, so was perfect. You also have a sink and towels in your room, so getting ready in there is not a problem. The hotel is full of character and the clientele is young and trendy. The coffee bar in the lobby is really popular and seems to always be busy. My stay was comfortable and the location was really convenient to get around Portland using the streetcar or MAX to and from the airport. I was in town for a wedding and had friends staying all throughout downtown, but I using the streetcar was super easier to meet up with all of them! I would definitely recommend staying here if you want a truly urban and modern hotel experience!

Can't wait to return!
This quirky, fun hotel was perfect for my 3 day get away. I stayed in a room with 2 double beds, as three friends were with me. We fit comfortably (the beds were surprisingly luxerious, especially the pillows). The bathroom could be awkward if you were staying with people you didnt know well, since the door was very thin. Noises from the street were common (we were right over Stark) but this wasn't a problem for us since we were out very late each night. If you want a quieter room try asking for one near the back and higher up. Located in the heart of SW Portland, The Ace Hotel is the perfect location to see the city. It is nestled between Clyde Commons, Pete & Zuke's, and Stumptown Coffee (which are well known for good reason!). It is minutes from Pioneer Courthouse Square, The Portland Art Museum, and the Max line as well. The staff were all extremely curteous, and very friendly. The Ace has a great vibe, and lots of local creative types make it their study area. Be sure to check out the upstairs lobby-there is an IMac for your use, and an old library card cataluge full of fun secrets! Overall I had an incredible experience, and would highly reccomend this place to anyone looking to get off the beaten path and enjoy a little hipster hospitality.

Ace Hotel -funky and good!
Portland is a funky town with lots of character. Ace fits right in, it's like an old home but of course, bigger. I did the share-a-bath deal and it was fine. This isn't the Hyatt, but it's great if you're laid back and looking for local color and experience. I will be back.

Great Location! Unexpected Rooms & Bathrooms
The Ace Hotel was in a great location and the staff was wonderful. The room and hotel were kept very clean for an older establishment. The downside was that we did not have a bathroom in our room so had to go down the hall in the middle of the night. Also, the room does not have any amenities and although our stated 3 twin beds, we were not expecting bunk beds so ask a lot of questions before booking.

soothingly austere
This was absolutely the best hotel stay I have ever had, even though I stayed in the very cheapest room (the shared triple, with two bunk beds + one other single bed, and a bathroom down the hall). The Ace offers an amazing balance of simplicity, style, and character. The beds are firm and comfortable, and the hall bath is fantastic -- huge, spotless, nice robes/towels/bath products provided, and offers a nice dose of privacy when you're sharing your hotel room with others. I stayed for three nights and never had to wait to get into the closest hall bath (and there was another one right around the corner). Also, for a jet-lagged east-coaster the fact that the excellent coffee shop off the lobby opens at 6 a.m. (even on Sunday) was a godsend. I was all set up on the super-comfortable lobby couches with a cappuccino and a Sunday Times (provided free by the Ace -- oh, and free wireless too) by 6:15. I have never before actually enjoyed hanging around a hotel lobby. My only suggestions: providing an extra blanket or two in the room would be good, especially since in the shared triple the heat/cooling unit blows right on the person in the top bunk (so it's better to regulate the temperature with bedding). The pillows were also crazy over-stuffed, not so good for necks. Also, how about some lotion with the bath products? Finally, on both check-in and check-out the person working the front desk was pretty stand-offish (though I'd take that over fake fawning any day). Overall: well done, Ace!

Spartan convenience, great neighborhood--BUT some things to consider...
I got one of the economy rooms but didn't realize just how spartan my room was going to be. There was about a foot of closet space and no dresser to speak of. I liked the funky atmosphere of the hotel and the staff was very helpful but I did not like the blaring music in the lobby during the day (if you are trying to sleep during the day, you will find earplugs in your room.) The hotel is also very popular with the younger crowd so if you are booking during spring break as I did, that is something to consider. I didn't mind using a communal shower at all but had to let the water run for almost 5 minutes until it go warm enough to get in. The neighborhood is great--Kenny and Zukes delicatessen next door is to die for and there is a Whole Foods (for the budget-minded traveler) close by and an Italian deli.

What a great boutique hotel! The rooms are spartan, but have many stylish (funky) touches, including claw-foot bathtub, futon-style bed (very comfortable!), sink separate from the bathroom within the main room, old newspapers as wallpaper. The common areas and atmosphere are for a young 20-something set. Alternative music playing, great coffee shop adjoining the lobby, couches and a big coffee table where people congregate. The neighborhood is also well located -- a short walk to excellent restaurants (ask the registration desk for advice).

Very nice hotel: pity the room was so noisy I could not sleep
I prefer to do business with small scale, locally owned establishments whenever possible. For hotels I would much rather stay at a place with a little more atmosphere than the cookie cutter rooms offered by the big chains. Certainly the ACE Hotel has a lot of character, and the location is very nice. I also found the service to be good. The room too was perfectly fine as far as layout and facilities were concerned. The problem was that the room was noisy: it was on the forth (top) floor and the HVAC units must have been perched right above, because they growled, hammered and switch on and off all night long. Quite literally right outside my window was the HVAC for the building next door, and it too labored all night long. The internal walls have no insulation and must be very thin, because you can hear every noise or spoken word from the rooms on either side. Basically the #1 thing for which I need a hotel room is quiet for sleeping, and the ACE Hotel, as much as I wanted to like it, totally failed on that basic service.

What you pay is what you get
This hotel is reasonable - not a luxury one, but a clean and neat hotel. Even though shower and restroom facility is shared across multiple rooms, I did not check it carefully before I made a reservation and considering the room price, it was okay.

Nice hotel, nice coffee shop, nice location. Negatives are noise from bars opposite which seem to fill up around 11pm. Bed was futon style which is a little hard, and trash can only emptied after I left a note. However, I would stay there again.

It's Aces in Portland
The Ace is a cute, kitsch boutique hotel slap-dab in the middle of Portland's Pearl District. It has a Royal Tenenbaums feel to it and great amenities including an internet library, Stumptown Coffee an amazing restaurant Clyde Common. It is also conveniently located in next to Kenny & Zuke’s Deli. Suffice it to say you could have a grand ol’ time without even leaving the building but if you opt to get out and about. You don’t have to go far to hit the shops around the pearl, take in a move or take on a yoga class at Yoga Pearl.

Decent hotel in decent location
The hotel overall was pretty cool, but for what I paid I would have liked more. The window in my room didn't close so they just stuck a beanbag thing in it. Every room is different but my friends' had things mine didnt.. they put cool glass coke bottles in the room but ours didn't have a bottle opener. The clawfoot tub was nice, and we slept well considering it was the hardest mattress I've ever slept on in my life.

Exactly what I want in a downtown hotel
The Ace was aces in my book. Fabulous room decor (but industrial modern is my thing) in a building with great bones. Grab some Stumptown Coffee (best in Portland) off the lobby in morning and Clyde Common for meals. Reliable wireless access. Great shower and nice comfy robes. Didn't spend a ton of time in my room but loved it when I did. Others have complained about noise but that wasn't an issue at all for me.

Will definitely go back!
We stayed at the Ace based on recommendation from my 20-something son. The hotel definitely attracts the younger age group, but we felt totally comfortable as 50-somethings! We selected a standard room with shared bath to save some money. We had never done that before but we never had to wait to use the bathroom and would definitely do it again! The hotel has such great character and the rooms and bathrooms were spotless and staff very helpful. The hotel is great location between downtown and Pearl District.

Fun & Funky
The Good: Fun Funky little spot right near the Crystal Ballroom in the Pearl District. My boyfriend and I were crashing there for the night to see a show so the location was perfect. I am from Brooklyn so the price of the hotel was definitely good compared to New York. The bed had huge pillows surrounding the top and side which were super comfy. The decor was artsy and random (which is my style so it was prefect). There was a little radio/alarm stacked on top of vintage suitcases. One wall was covered in pages from an old book. We had the shared bathroom and double bed combo which worked out better than expected. We thought the bathrooms were going to be dorm style -but there were a couple of private bath/showers per floor that were clean and really large. Stumptown Coffee Cafe is awesome, as is the free computer in the little top floor lounge area. Lots of people on macs hanging out in the bottom lounge. Bar downstairs. The bad: The room was a bit smaller than expected--and once all fees and taxes were added it was a bit spendy for no bathroom.
