The best area to stay in Plakados for most visitors is Plakados Town, particularly the area around the old port and the main square.Plakados Town is the island's capital and its primary hub. The old port area is particularly picturesque with its waterfront tavernas and boats, while the main square (Plateia Plakadou) is a central gathering point with cafes and shops. The town itself is built on a hillside, offering lovely views, and its narrow, winding streets are superb for an evening stroll.Couples will find Plakados Town an excellent base. The romantic setting of the old port, with its dining options right by the water, creates a memorable experience. There are also several boutique hotels tucked away in the quieter backstreets, offering a more intimate stay while still being close to all the amenities, including charming local shops and art galleries. For those seeking a more secluded and tranquil experience, particularly families, the area around Agia Marina beach, just a short drive from Plakados Town, is a wonderful alternative. This area offers a beautiful, sandy beach with calmer waters, ideal for children.

The best time to go to Plakados is during the shoulder seasons of May, early June, or September, and early October. These months offer pleasant weather, with warm temperatures superb for exploring the island's beaches and historical sites, but without the intense heat and larger crowds of mid-summer. You'll find that most businesses are fully open, and the sea is warm enough for swimming. For travellers who prefer a quieter experience and don't mind slightly cooler temperatures, late April or late October can also be appealing. During these times, you'll often find more great prices on accommodation and flights, and the island takes on a more relaxed pace. However, some smaller establishments might be closed, and sea swimming might be a bit brisk for some.
