La collection d’anciens petits sous-marins et vaisseaux à l’extérieur du bâtiment principal est un des éléments les plus populaires du musée. Voyez d’abord le réservoir rouge brillant qu’est le U.S. Navy SEALAB-1, la première installation d’habitation sous-marine au monde. En 1964, quatrehommes y ont passé 10jours alors que l’installation était au fond de l’océan au large de la côte des Bermudes. Découvrez ensuite la base sous-marine Deep Dive System MK1 de la Marine américaine construite en 1968 afin d’offrir des pièces d’habitation pressurisées aux plongeurs qui travaillent à des profondeurs considérables. Voyez aussi des modules et des nacelles sous-marins autrefois utilisés pour la recherche. Observez finalement le Techdiver ayant servi à récupérer une bombe nucléaire intacte au fond de la mer au large de la côte d’Espagne. L’avion qui transportait l’arme s’est écrasé en tentant de faire le plein de carburant en vol en 1966. À l’intérieur du musée, vous découvrirez un assortiment d’anciens scaphandres à casque, des pièces d’équipement naval et d’autres véhicules. Jetez un coup d’œil sur le scaphandre renforcé de 1913 qui permettait aux plongeurs de travailler à une profondeur de 122mètres (400pieds). Regardez des vidéos démontrant l’utilisation des premiers équipements de plongée. Examinez des trésors engloutis récupérés d’épaves remontant au 16ᵉsiècle. Montez à bord du Beaver. Ce véhicule submersible en eau profonde permettait jadis à des chercheurs de descendre à des profondeurs de 610mètres (2000pieds) pour explorer le fond marin. Descendez dans un vieux sous-marin et explorez-en l’intérieur. Le Musée de l’Homme dans la mer se situe sur la route panoramique de Panama City Beach, à une courte distance de marche du circuit du trolleybus local. De nombreuses places de stationnement gratuites sont offertes aux visiteurs en voiture. Le musée est ouvert du mercredi au samedi et un prix d’entrée est exigé.
