La place Jean‑Jaurès est le cœur historique de Lens, un espace central où se mêlent histoire, architecture et vie locale. Elle est bordée de maisons de ville et de commerces aux façades colorées, souvent dotées de larges baies qui donnent une atmosphère chaleureuse et animée.  
  
L’endroit est dominé par l’église Saint‑Léger, reconstruite à l’identique après la Première Guerre mondiale, avec son style gothique ou néo‑gothique et ses vitraux qui attirent le regard. C’est aussi là que se trouve l’Hôtel de Ville, édifié dans les années 1960, ce qui ajoute une touche plus moderne à l’ensemble.  
  
Après la destruction totale de Lens durant la Première Guerre mondiale, la place a été entièrement repensée et agrandie. Les immeubles qui l’entourent présentent aujourd’hui une grande variété de styles : régionaliste, classique ou encore Art déco, très en vogue au moment de la reconstruction.
