Try waterskiing, enjoy sunbathing and go swimming on this former river, whose colorful fountains and fire shows light up a waterfront mall.

Trout fishing and boating are among the many recreational activities on Lake Taneycomo, which winds through Branson in the form of a river. Its shoreline passes a marina and a waterfront shopping center. Explore the extensive network of waterways by boat to see this vast human-made reservoir from every angle.

Admire the scenic reservoir from the outdoor plaza of the Branson Landing mall. Hourly fire-and-light shows accompany the fountain jets rising from the water next to this 1-mile (1.6-kilometer) boardwalk, which lights up at night. Enjoy a meal at a café or restaurant in the shopping center overlooking the lake.

Stroll along the shore of the lake, as its channel passes through Downtown Branson. Enjoy a picnic on the grassy bank of North Beach Park, go on a boat ride on the water from Main Street Lake Cruises, or let your kids run around in the playground of Alexander Park. Sunset Park is known for its glorious views at dusk, as the sky turns red and reflects on the lake.

As you head west, you’ll reach the lower portion of the Lakeside Forest Wilderness Area. Relax on the swinging porch at the foot of the park’s stone steps and enjoy stunning views of the reservoir. See the ruins of the Historic Owen Homestead that burned down in 2015. Climb into the Small Cave.

The reservoir was created in 1913, when it was transformed from a river. Note that it still retains the look and feel of a river, with several narrow passages.

Lake Taneycomo passes through Branson in the southwestern corner of Missouri. It was created from the former White River, confined by the Powersite Dam near Forsyth. Reach the western edge of the lake for the Table Rock Dam and its namesake lake.

Explore the region for nearby sights such as Dolly Parton’s Stampede, the Branson Scenic Railway and the Veterans Memorial Museum.
