The best area to stay in Kilpisjarvi is directly in the village itself, particularly along the shores of Lake Kilpisjärvi, as it's the main hub for visitors to this remote part of Finnish Lapland.

The village of Kilpisjärvi is small and compact, located in the fells with stunning views of the surrounding Arctic landscape. The main road, Valtatie 21 (E8), runs through it, and most accommodations and services are located either directly on this road or just off it, often with direct access to the lake. The Kilpisjärvi Visitor Centre and the local supermarket are central landmarks.

For couples seeking a peaceful retreat with access to nature, staying in a lakeside cabin or a hotel with lake views is ideal. You'll be able to enjoy the quiet beauty of the fells, potentially spot the Northern Lights directly from your accommodation, and have easy access to hiking trails like those leading to Saana fell or the Three-Country Cairn.

Families looking for a blend of comfort and outdoor activities will appreciate accommodations within the main village. Many hotels and guesthouses offer family rooms or cabins with cooking facilities, which is convenient.

The best time to go to Kilpisjarvi depends entirely on the experience you're seeking, with both winter (December to April) and summer (June to August) offering distinct adventures.

For those dreaming of a winter wonderland, December to April is ideal. This period offers reliable snow cover, great for activities like snowmobiling, husky sledding, and cross-country skiing across the fells. It's also prime time for experiencing the Northern Lights, which are frequently visible on clear nights. The frozen landscapes around Lake Kilpisjärvi and the surrounding fells create a truly magical setting for couples looking for a romantic, adventurous getaway.

If you prefer hiking and the midnight sun, then June to August is your window. During these months, the snow has melted, revealing the stunning Arctic fells and making trails accessible. The sun doesn't set for several weeks, providing endless daylight for exploring the wilderness, including climbs up Saana fell or treks to the Three-Country Cairn.
