"amazing experience! The staff was very helpful at all times, helping us plan activities and providing everything we needed, even before we arrived at the camp. The location of the Jima in the middle of the dunes is magnificent, the food is very good and plentiful. Jima was very clean and perfectly designed, including everything you would need. In our case we did a tour visiting the nomadic villages by 4x4 and quad bikes on the dunes, even at the campsite we went to by camel. Everything was...

Top Khamlia Hotel Reviews

Nasser Palace Suites & Spa

10/10 Excellent

"Our stay here was the highlight of our trip. The staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly, and the resort is both beautiful and pristine. We were fortunate to book on a day when we had the entire resort to ourselves, and the staff kindly arranged a quad excursion in the desert for us while we dined at the restaurant. The desert experience was something I had long hoped to do, and this resort helped make it one of my fondest memories. I only wish we had stayed longer than one night. The room was also lovely."

Sahara Magic Luxury Camp

10/10 Excellent

"We decided to book Sahara Magic Luxury Camp independently rather than join a group tour, and we’re so glad we did! Hassan warmly welcomed us at the pickup point and drove us to camp in their 4x4. Mustafa greeted us with wonderful hospitality and delicious Moroccan tea. The camel trek to watch the sunset over the Sahara was absolutely mesmerizing and a highlight of our trip. The tents were clean and well maintained, but the food was the real standout! The tajines at dinner were the best I had throughout our entire trip to Morocco, with generous portions that left us completely stuffed. Breakfast was equally delicious, especially the Moroccan omelette. A special shoutout to the staff who organized the evening entertainment and bonfire, making the night even more memorable. The hospitality, food, and overall experience were exceptional. I only wish we could have stayed longer! Highly recommend Sahara Magic Luxury Camp to anyone looking for a memorable Sahara Desert experience."

Riad Les Jardins De Merzouga

8/10 Good

"Some side areas were under construction or repair but all of the main areas were clean, well-maintained and attractively designed. The rooms in particular are quite nice, they're just like the photos. The only thing to complain about is that the wifi is not very good. The owner or manager speaks English and was very helpful in booking a tour for me. Would easily recommend it as a place to stay for enjoying Erg Chebbi."

Amanar Khaimas Desert Camp

10/10 Excellent

"The tents on the campground were beautifully appointed and felt like luxury hotel rooms, from a clean and comfortable bed to high-quality shower and bathroom areas. The personnel could not have been more attentive and accommodating and were helpful and supportive at every turn. Set dinners were well-priced and were very good. My one cautionary message would be some unexpected additional charges imposed by the camp. They charge 300 MAD ($30 US) per night for critically important nighttime air-conditioning (daytime heat in the Sahara makes nighttime in the tent unbearably warm), and 300 MAD ($30 US) for 4-wheel drive transportation, each way, between the main road in Mergouza (as near to the camp as most cars can go) to the camp. Our two nights at this camp were a fun and memorable experience — visits to nomadic areas and camel rides our favorite highlights — and would highly recommend it."

Berber Palace Hotel

10/10 Excellent

"We had a fabulous time here. The staff, particularly the Manager, went out of their way to meet our needs. They made us feel welcome far beyond check out time, with use of their beautiful pool. Given the heat, this was greatly appreciated. A fabulous chicken tagine was made especially for us. Highly recommended!"

Desert Season Luxury Camp

10/10 Excellent

"A lovely welcome with Moroccan tea before departure, along with clear explanations of all the activities offered by the team. The tents were very comfortable and beautifully located in the heart of the desert. Everything was well organized, from the activities to the dinner and breakfast. A special mention to Saïd, who took care of the 4x4 driving through the dunes and was always available to help with anything we needed. The whole team was incredibly kind, welcoming, and attentive, making the experience truly memorable."

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to go to Khamlia?

The best time to visit Khamlia is during the autumn (September to November) and spring (March to May) months.

During these periods, the weather is pleasantly warm, with daytime temperatures typically ranging from 20°C to 30°C. This makes exploring the village and surrounding desert comfortable without the intense heat of summer or the cooler nights of winter. The clear skies are ideal for stargazing, a popular activity in this region.

Couples looking for a romantic escape will find these seasons particularly appealing. The milder temperatures are great for camel treks into the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunrise or sunset, and for enjoying traditional Gnawa music performances under the stars without discomfort. Many guesthouses offer cosy courtyards and terraces that are lovely to relax in during these months.

For solo travellers interested in cultural experiences, visiting during autumn or spring offers the best conditions to engage with the local community. You can comfortably participate in drumming workshops, visit local cooperatives, or simply enjoy a mint tea with villagers.
