Clad in cedar and bathed in sunshine, this 8-sided artistic retreat invites travelers to re-connect to nature. The Octagon at Climbing Vine Cottages is only 12 minutes from downtown Ithaca but a world away on 16 acres of field, forest, orchards and gardens. The Octagon sleeps 2 on a full-size, decadently comfortable, memory foam bed. The kitchen is equipped with all of the basic essentials including a small fridge, induction cook top, and toaster oven plus cooking supplies and utensils. Dine in simplicity at the glowing walnut bar counter overlooking a wildflower field. Basic dining supplies are provided as are local, award-winning Gimme coffee, local honey, tea and olive oil. Melt away stress in the claw foot bathtub featuring a Victorian faucet and hand shower below the greenhouse window brimming with houseplants. The toilet and hand sink are tucked away providing privacy in this one-of-a-kind dwelling. Step through the sliding glass doors to a private grass lawn and perennial garden for picnics, sun bathing and star gazing. Internet is fast and reliable, capable of video conferencing, streaming, etc. The Octagon works well for travelers needing to work from home. Our grounds are resplendent with flowers, herbs, fruit and vegetables at the 2 orchards and numerous gardens. Our property borders a nature preserve especially noted for its spring wildflowers and featuring many incredible waterfalls. We're also only 5 minutes drive from both Treman and Buttermilk Falls State Parks. It is very private and the wildflower loop was beautiful. Butterflies were in full force and gorgeous. We took a trip to Buttermilk Falls, less than 15 minutes away, and spent time in Ithaca at the Commons,. Odyssey Bookstore, and Mama Said Hand Pies. I loved the escape to nature and we felt like it was in the middle of nowhere, yet only 9 miles from Ithaca. I loved the walk through the wildflower, picked fruit from the trees, visiting the chickens for fresh eggs and frogs and fish in the pond. It would have been an amazing place for stargazing if there wouldn’t of been cloud cover, but the sound of the crickets while I was sleep was perfect. The claw foot tub was also a bonus for me! Ithaca is only about 10 minutes away from this property, but one has a pleasant feeling of isolation here because of the thoughtful siting of the little house at the back of the property. The interior is clean and well tended. The air conditioning and fans worked well. There is a private picnic area outdoors with a grill and fire pit, and fireflies decorate the meadow at dusk. My husband and I came up for Cornell homecoming. This place is just about 10 minutes from the commons, and was way easier to get to than I expected. We walked in the nearby woods, ate breakfast at the picnic table and enjoyed the simple but well-appointed house. Loved the bathtub and the excellent bed! Michelle was very friendly and we appreciated the use of WD40 for our bike! We spent time in Ithaca hiking, biking and going to the amazing farmer's market and restaurants. We normally stay in places without electricity or running water, so we were absolutely thrilled to walk into the octagon and discover actual air conditioning and a flush toilet! The octagon is adorably decorated but without any clutter and the windows, all look out into the meadow. We saw bunnies, heard the rooster crow, and ventured into the adjacent nature preserve to check out the waterfall. What a dreamy spot this is! I had a training schedule on Cornell's campus the same day as the Grateful Dead concert so there weren't any rooms available at the hotels I typically stay at. The Octagon House was just a 15 minute drive from campus and was a little bit of paradise. As a single woman I was nervous when I first arrived because it is a very rural property and it was also raining so kind of creepy but when I woke up in the morning the sun was shining and it was glorious. I took 3 baths in the clawfoot tub. So relaxing. I'll definitely be staying here instead of the chain hotels in the future! ##### Rebecca O. The bed was truly the most comfortable ever. The tub was awesome. The stars at night were clear and magnificent--very little light pollution here! Michelle took great care to provide written information about the surrounding area. The property borders some great walking trails and woods. This is ideal for a single or an easy-going couple, because there is little bathroom privacy--hello! the toilet is a curtained stall and the tub is next to the kitchen sink. The check in process was so simple. We loved the bath soap and the yummy coffee. As for us, we found it to be the perfect combination of rustic nature and pampered comfort, and we are planning our return visit.
