Itajaí is a vast city and district with a stunning bay and a fascinating colonial past. It’s also known for its annual music festival and rich culture. Much of the municipality’s activity is based around the lively Port of Itajaí. Stroll along the banks of the Rio Itajaí-açu, as it flows from the historic centre into the Atlantic Ocean.

Relax on the pristine white sand of some of the city’s beaches, including Cabeçudas Beach and Praia do Morcego. The latter is a stunning secluded cove hidden beneath verdant cliffs. Anticipate fairly wet and mild winters, with dry, hot summers that are perfect for sunbathing.

Cool down with a refreshing dip in the ocean at Atalaia Beach. Head to the beach’s southern tip to take photos of the iconic Parrot’s Beak cliff formation. Visit some of the historic centre’s attractions, such as the Jardim da Luz and Itajaí Municipal Theatre. Head inland to the Vinícola Villa Prando to taste wine varieties.

Attend the Marejada festival to try the succulent seafood of the region, with shrimp among the most popular dishes. Enjoy beers and purchase souvenir plates featuring dancing groups, accordions and fish. The festival lasts for around 2 weeks in the middle of October.

Many intriguing landmarks are dotted around the city’s outskirts. Learn about the history of the region at the Museu da Familia Colonial and go to the Museu da Cerveja in the culture-rich Blumenau area. Visit the Blumenau Cathedral and the Blumenau City Hall. Continue inland for the Music Museum and Botanical Garden in Timbó.

The municipality overlooks the Atlantic Ocean on the eastern side of the state of Santa Catarina. Arrive at the Ministro Victor Konder International Airport in the city of Navegantes on the other side of the river. Take a passenger vessel from the main pier to travel up and down Brazil’s green coast. You can get around the main city by bus or taxi.
