![The Harburg Castle is one of the largest, best-preserved castles in all of Germany. Visiting Harburg and the Harburg Castle is like stepping back into the Middle Ages! Harburg Castle is one of the jewels of the Romantic Road. Wonderfully preserved, the castle sits high on a hill and overlooks the town for which it's named.
It is unclear when the first structure was erected, but the castle was first mentioned in a document in 1150. However, historians believe that portions of the castle may have been built in the 10th and 11th centuries, and Roman remains have been found on the site.

Because of its strategic location, it provided a military stronghold during the reign of the Staufer-Kings from 1079 to 1272. It was referenced in documents in 12th century as the Staufer Imperial Castle. In 1295, the castle was transferred to the Count of Oettingen and it has been in the Oettingen, and later the Oettingen-Wallerstein, families ever since.

The castle complex, including the castle house, chapel, sentry walk (complete with holes through which to pour hot oil on invading marauders!), prison tower, dungeon, and various buildings used to support the inhabitants, is surrounded by a wall supporting six towers. L'endroit est très calme (il faut faire abstraction des petites bêbêtes, nous sommes à la campagne), la famille qui tient l'hôtel est à l'écoute et rendant service, le petit déjeuner et le repas au restaurant sont très bons, bref nous y reviendrons volontiers. »

« We had room number 5, which was a 2 bedroom apartment with kitchen and balcony. It had a separate dining area and 2 couches. The bathroom was large and each room offered a nice view. Our hostess was very friendly and welcoming. The only downside was that at 6 am the nearby church bells went off for what seemed like a few minutes without letup and that woke us all up. »

« Was very pleasantly surprised. I wasn't expecting much, perhaps something a bit small in the middle of nowhere. However, the buildings are characterful, the surrounding countryside scenic and the staff very helpful, friendly and efficient. The room was clean and comfortable although perhaps slightly dated. Breakfast was also good. Easy to reach by car and with plenty of parking, not so sure about public transport though, although it is just outside a reasonable sized town. I highly recommend it. »

« Procédure de Check in en ligne un peu compliquée car tous les mails reçus sont en allemand. Mais une fois passé cela, c’est parfait car il n’y a rien à faire à l’arrivée, on ouvre toutes les portes avec notre téléphone. La chambre est spacieuse. Le propriétaire est extrêmement agréable (encore merci à lui de nous avoir accueilli au petit déjeuner alors que nous sommes arrivés trop tard). Le petit déjeuner est excellent, avec énormément de choix, tous de bonne qualité. »

![The Harburg Castle is one of the largest, best-preserved castles in all of Germany. Visiting Harburg and the Harburg Castle is like stepping back into the Middle Ages! Harburg Castle is one of the jewels of the Romantic Road. Wonderfully preserved, the castle sits high on a hill and overlooks the town for which it's named.
It is unclear when the first structure was erected, but the castle was first mentioned in a document in 1150. However, historians believe that portions of the castle may have been built in the 10th and 11th centuries, and Roman remains have been found on the site.

Because of its strategic location, it provided a military stronghold during the reign of the Staufer-Kings from 1079 to 1272. It was referenced in documents in 12th century as the Staufer Imperial Castle. In 1295, the castle was transferred to the Count of Oettingen and it has been in the Oettingen, and later the Oettingen-Wallerstein, families ever since.

The castle complex, including the castle house, chapel, sentry walk (complete with holes through which to pour hot oil on invading marauders!), prison tower, dungeon, and various buildings used to support the inhabitants, is surrounded by a wall supporting six towers.
