The best area to stay in Guelaguetza, Oaxaca, Mexico, is the historic centre, particularly around the Zocalo and the area leading up to the Santo Domingo de Guzmán Church.

This neighbourhood is the heart of Oaxaca City and is very walkable. It's characterised by historic architecture, cobblestone streets, and bustling markets. The Zocalo, the main square, is a central gathering spot, surrounded by restaurants and shops, while the beautiful Santo Domingo church and its cultural centre are just a short stroll north along Calle Macedonio Alcalá, a pedestrian-only street.

Couples often find this area ideal for a romantic trip. They can enjoy leisurely walks through the historic streets, dine at upscale restaurants with rooftop views of the city, and easily access attractions like the Ethnobotanical Garden or browse artisan crafts in the Benito Juárez Market.

For those looking for a slightly more tranquil experience while remaining close to the action, the neighbourhoods just north of Santo Domingo, such as Reforma or Xochimilco, offer a good balance.

The best time to visit Guelaguetza, Oaxaca, Mexico, is during the festival itself, which takes place over two Mondays in July.

The Guelaguetza festival is a truly unique cultural event, showcasing traditional dances, music, and costumes from the various regions of Oaxaca. It's held at the Auditorio Guelaguetza, an open-air amphitheatre on the Cerro del Fortín hill, offering fantastic views of the city. Attending during the festival provides the most complete and authentic experience of this celebration.

For those who wish to experience the festival, booking well in advance is essential. Flights and accommodations fill up quickly, and prices tend to be higher due to demand. However, the opportunity to witness this spectacular display of Oaxacan heritage makes it well worth the planning and investment.

If you prefer to avoid the crowds, the shoulder seasons just before (June) or after (August/September) the festival offer pleasant weather and a chance to explore Oaxaca City and its surroundings at a more relaxed pace.
