The best area to stay in Gubeikou is near the Gubeikou Great Wall section, particularly in the local villages like Gubeikou Village itself or those close to Jinshanling.

Gubeikou Village is the main hub, located directly beneath the Gubeikou section of the Great Wall. It's a small, traditional village where many guesthouses and local eateries are concentrated. The village offers direct access to the hiking trails leading up to the unrestored sections of the Wall, providing a very authentic experience. You'll find accommodation options ranging from simple guesthouses to more comfortable inns, often run by local families.

For couples seeking a blend of natural beauty and historical exploration, staying within Gubeikou Village is ideal. It offers a tranquil base with the convenience of being able to walk directly to the Great Wall for sunrise or sunset hikes. The local guesthouses often provide home-cooked meals, giving you a taste of regional cuisine, and the evenings are quiet, superb for relaxation after a day of walking.

Travellers prioritising easy access to a more developed, yet still scenic, part of the Great Wall might consider staying closer to Jinshanling. While a short drive from Gubeikou Village, this area offers hotels with more modern amenities and often stunning views of the Wall.

The best time to visit Gubeikou is during the spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) months, when the weather is most agreeable for exploring.

During these periods, the temperatures are mild and pleasant, making hiking along the Great Wall comfortable. Spring brings blooming wildflowers, adding a touch of colour to the ancient fortifications. Autumn offers crisp air and stunning foliage, with the surrounding hillsides turning vibrant shades of red and gold. These conditions are ideal for travellers who want to spend significant time outdoors, appreciating the natural beauty and historical significance of the area without the extremes of summer heat or winter cold.

For those looking to avoid crowds and potentially find better value on accommodation, visiting just outside the peak holiday weeks in spring and autumn can be advantageous.
