However, because of its age there are a number of stairs in the main building and low ceilings and many rooms are located in cottages away from the main building. Umbrellas are provided but might be a factor to consider if weather very cold or wet. Very charming place and set in wonderful peaceful location in the Pennines. Tasty food and lovely rooms and ambience. Breakfast exceptional - one of the best I’ve had. The service was exceptional. Because of 2 weddings we had to change rooms and this was made very easy for us! Both rooms were lovely, the first Weardale, had a wood burner and second room Tom Forster in the main building had the most amazing view of the garden and the hills beyond! There was even a telescope and books on astronomy to enjoy clear, wide night skies! We ate in the restaurant both nights! We would have expected more but maybe it was because it was a Saturday. The restaurant was nice and the service was good but we had high expectations for the food and it turned out to be a little ordinary. Certainly no wow factor which was expected after all of the write ups. The village is pretty and if you love walking then it is a great spot.
