Freed during the Civil War he became a minister and joined the Army as a military chaplain. He retired in 1906 and began following Booker T Washington’s philosophy of racial equality through industrious self-help. Colonel Allen Allensworth, along with four other black settlers established the town. It was the first in California to be "founded, financed, and governed by blacks." Allensworth's reputation drew many from all over the country to the town, causing some to buy property sight-unseen in order to support the efforts. In the early 20th century, the area boasted a great boom and by 1910 hosted California's first African American school district. With the death of Colonel Allensworth in 1914, the town experienced extreme losses, coupled with severe drought and decreased crop yields. (1,416 reviews) My husbamd and I stayed at the Discovery inn and Suites on 2/13-14\. We stayed in room 211\. I want to start by saying everyone was super polite, and friendly. The rooms and property were super clean. When we checked in at 3pm, the room we were given had the door open and it looked like soiled sheets on the bed. Housekeeping said they forgot...honest mistake. 2 of the 3 beds had hair under the sheets. We were a bit disgusted and obviously did not sleep in either one of those beds. The main reason we wanted to sleep in the 2nd bedroom is because my husband and I use cpap machines when we sleep, and that room had a place for us to put our machines. We didnt sleep in that room. We slept on the cleanest bed, and I put my cpap machine on the floor. I'm just letting you know. The hair was gross.
