The best area to stay in Coimbra is in the city centre, particularly around the Baixa and Alta districts.

The Baixa district is the lower part of the city, easily recognised by its flat, walkable streets and the Rio Mondego running alongside it. It's the commercial heart of Coimbra, with Rua Ferreira Borges and Rua Visconde da Luz being key shopping streets. Here, you'll find a wide selection of cafes, traditional restaurants, and local shops. It's also home to the Santa Cruz Monastery, a significant historical landmark.

Families often find the Baixa a convenient base. Its flat terrain makes it easy to navigate with prams or for children, and the proximity to the river offers pleasant riverside walks and access to the Parque Verde do Mondego, a large green space superb for children to play. The central bus station is also located here, making day trips straightforward.

The Alta district, on the other hand, is the upper part of the city, dominated by the historic University of Coimbra, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This area is characterised by its steep, winding cobbled streets and ancient buildings. Key landmarks include the Old Cathedral (Sé Velha) and the Joanina Library.

Couples looking for a romantic and historically rich experience will enjoy staying in the Alta. The elevated position offers lovely views over the city, especially from around the university grounds.

The best time to go to Coimbra is during the dry season, which runs from April to October.

During these months, you'll experience pleasant weather with less rainfall, making it ideal for exploring the city's historical sites and enjoying outdoor activities. Temperatures are generally comfortable, ranging from the mid-20s to low 30s Celsius. This period is particularly good for those who enjoy walking tours and visiting attractions like the University of Coimbra and the Old Cathedral without the interruption of frequent showers.

While November to March is the rainy season, it can still be a good time to visit if you don't mind occasional downpours. The city is often less crowded, and you might find better deals on accommodation. However, some outdoor activities may be less enjoyable.
