In the Middle Ages, the Cloth Hall (Lakenhalle) was among Europe’s most prominent commercial sites for clothing trades. However, this early 14th-century building is not as old as it looks. The hall was destroyed during World War I and has since been painstakingly restored to match its original splendor. One of the architectural highlights of this Gothic structure is its 230-feet (70-meter) belfry, which was used as a watchtower for several centuries. Climb the steps to the top for the gorgeous views. For many years, cats were hurtled from this tower to their death. The real reason is not known however, some say it was a form of pest control and others because the animals were thought to be associated with black magic. Today, on the second Sunday of May, cats are celebrated with the Festival of Cats. The fiesta features a parade and the sight of toy cats being thrown from the bell tower. Wander through the Cloth Hall's first floor halls where goods used to be stored and sold. Head up to the second floor for the In Flanders Fields Museum, which covers aspects of World War I history. In the Donkerpoort passage near the museum's entrance is a large shell fired onto Ypres by a German gun. After you have paid the admission fee for the museum, browse artifacts and interactive exhibits to learn about World War I battles in the Flanders region. Read and hear the personal stories of individuals caught up in the war. During your visit to the Cloth Hall, you may hear sonorous melodies coming from the belfry. The tower has a carillon of 49 bells which chime several times during the day. The Cloth Hall is just to the west of the Kasteelgracht moat in the center of Ypres. Many bus stops are dotted around the busy area and you can take the train to Station Ieper, a 10-minute walk west of the site. Nearby landmarks include St. Martin’s Cathedral and Astrid Park. (28 reviews) The staff was very courteous and friendly. However, the room we were assigned on the first night was quite a shock. The shower was located in the bedroom with only a single glass wall for separation. There was no sofa and only one chair in the room, as well as just one small bath towel provided. Overall, the room felt more like a closet than a proper hotel room. Given the price we paid, we expected a much more decent accommodation. The following day, I requested a different room, which we received that evening. This room was significantly better and met our expectations. That said, I believe a discount should have been offered for the first night, which unfortunately did not happen. Overall, the hotel is very clean and modern. (351 reviews) Overall the Hotel Fleur de Ville was a very nice place to stay in Brussels in the City Center. It was an easy walk to the Grand Place and the Christmas Markets. The luxury shopping area on Bd.de Waterloo was a pleasant walk of about 15 minutes. Restaurants were plentiful and varied in the city center area. The hotel has a restaurant, but I did not eat there except for breakfast. The breakfast was adequate but somewhat limited in its variation. There were hot eggs, sausage and bacon as well as cereal, cold cuts and cheeses. The hotel had a small bar with some limits on what cocktails could be prepared. The rooms were large and well decorated. The bathroom was clean with almost instant hot water in the sink and shower. There were good black out drapes. Most travelers would probably have been happy with the central heat but for my wife and I the rooms were too warm. We resorted to turning the system off and opening the windows a bit in the evening to cool the room for a few hours before bed then closing them and leaving the central heat off at night. Outdoor temperatures were 30 - 35F at night. The staff were very friendly and helpful at the front desk, bar and at breakfast. My wife and I enjoyed our stay and would stay there again.
